and perceptionthe whole areas of the interpersonal relationship between parishpriest and chief musician in a congregation. When I was withthe Joint Commission on Church Music of the Episcopal Churchwe made some headway with Seminars for Clergy and Organ-ists.More of these study programs are necessary, not only forthose who serve in large congregations with financial resources, but also for those in smaller congregations. The cooperation ofthose responsible for good liturgy is essential. \nSome may question some of the terminology used in this trea-tise,but do not let it blind you to the essential points and em-phases of the presentation. \nI commend this booklet to the Church in Los Angeles and else-where in the hope that our life of worship will be enhanced andGod given the greater glory as persons are helped in workingwith each other in the Lord's Household.+Robert C.Rusack \n4th Bishop of Los Angeles \n1 \nLIBRARY \nCLAREMONT SCHOOLOF THEOLOGY1325N.COLLEGE AVE.CLAREMONT,CA91711-3199 \nThe relationship between priest (rector)and organist-choir-master is of such importance to the well-being of a parish or con-gregation that it would be wise for seminary deans to re-assesshow well seminary training contributes to the effective qualityof that relationship.Until fairly recently seminaries(not all butmost)were negligent about this.Seminarians were graduatedwith a minimal knowledge of choir music, emerged into posi-tions of responsibility for,and authority over, the music of churchservices without adequate preparation for the wise use of thatauthority. In a liturgical church, such as is the Episcopal Church,a little more concern by seminaries for the values in worship, which are shared by priest and organist, can illuminate thechurch's worship life. \n+The Rt.Rev.John E.Hines, \nformer Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal ChurchFebruary 24,1978 \nThis statement was prepared by Bishop Hines for inclusion in this paperwhile he was in
