E. Ruthenberg, General Secretary of the Workers (Communist) Party, dated Apr 17, 1930. 7,1930A \nEvery worker knows that thereis a fight going on between theworkers and the capitalist bosses \n## THE CLASS STRUG-\n\nGLE \nwho own the factories, mills, mines and railroads.Heknows that the capitalist boss wants to pay low wages, thathe wants the workers to work long hours, and to workunder the severest working conditions they can endure. He knows that he must fight the capitalist boss in orderto secure higher wages, shorter hours, better working con-ditions and a higher standard of life for himself and hisfamily. \nThis struggle is not only a fight of each worker againsthis boss,or the workers of one factory against the boss,or the workers in one industry against the bosses. It isa fight between the workers as a class against the capi-talist class—a class struggle. \nThe capitalist bosses as a class have one kind of in-terest in industry. They want greater and greater profitsso they can build up big fortunes for themselves—becomemillionaires,multi-millionaires and even billionaires likeRockefeller,Ford and Morgan. The workers through theirlabor produce the wealth. The capitalist bosses can onlyprofit by exploiting the workers. The less they pay theworkers in comparison to what the workers produce thegreater the profits of the capitalists. \nThe workers as a class want a higher standard of life. They can only secure it through forcing the capitalists topay higher wages,to grant shorter hours and better work-ing conditions. The workers,as a class, have a differentinterest than those of the capitalist bosses. \nThe results of this conflict of interest can be seen onall sides in this country in the strikes, lockouts, boycotts.Miners, steel workers, railroad workers, textile workers, garment workers, workers of every industry are continual-ly forced to go on strike in order to secure better condi-tions of life. \nThe development of trusts--thatis,the consolidation of industry inthe hands of big corporations or \nTHE TRUSTS IN \nINDUSTRY \ncombinations of corporations—intensifies the strugglebetween the workers and the capitalists. \nIn place of a few hundreds or a few thousands ofworkers being affected by a strike, tens of thousands andeven hundreds of thousands are involved in each struggle. The strike of the 400,000 steel workers, the strikes of 1919and 1922 of 500,000 coal miners, the strike of the 400,000railway shopmen in 1922,show that greater and greaternumbers of workers become involved in common fightsagainst the capitalists. \nThe strike of the million coal miners in Great Britainsupported by a general strike of all the organized work-ers shows the further development of the struggle betweenthe workers and their bosses into a class struggle of thewhole working class against the capitalist class. \nThe farmers as well as theworkers are exploited by the capi-talist class. The capitalists own \nTHE FARMERS AND \nTHE CAPITALISTS \nthe means of transportation and the marketing organiza-tions through which the farmers must sell their products. The capitalists control the ","cbCaidz1t25qkawo","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaidz1t25qkawo","pdf",861102,12,"English","# Columbia University Libraries Preservation Division
