The narrative centers on a group of pirates who sail to the island of Ooroo in search of jewels. Driven by the ship owner's irrational hatred for the letter 'O'—stemming from a tragicomic accident involving his mother—the pirates systematically attempt to eradicate the letter from the language and existence of the island's inhabitants. This literary work explores themes of censorship, human nature, and the arbitrary power of authority through a playful, linguistic lens, showcasing Thurber's signature wit and absurdist style. As the pirates enforce their ban on all words containing 'O', the story reflects on the importance of language and the resilience of those who cherish the elements of speech that others seek to destroy. It serves as both a children's fantasy and a sophisticated allegory for adults.","by \nJames ThurberLllustratedbyMarc Simont \nman with the mapand the man with the shipsailed for the island \nrich with sapphires, emeraldsand rubies. \nTheir vessel was calledAeiu, \nwhich has every vowel butO. \nThe owner hatedO \nbecause his motherhad become wedgedin a porthole \nand they couldn't pull her in,so they had to push her out. \nThe island, \nOoroo, \nwas inhabited by gentle people \nwho did not resist \nwhen the pirates, \nunable to find any jewels, \ndecided to get rid ofall words with an \n(Continued on back fap) \n武 \nWithdrawn \n# TheWonderful\n\nby \nJames Thurber \nIllustrated by Marc Simont \nSimon and Schuster \nNew York \nALL RIGHTS RESERVED \nINCLUDING THE RIGHT OF REPRODUCTIONIN WHOLE OR IN PART IN ANY FORM◎1957 BY JAMES THURBER \nPUBLISHED BY SIMON AND SCHUSTER,INC.ROCKEFELLER CENTER,630 FIFTH AVENUENEW YORK 20,N.Y.FIRST PRINTING \nLIBRARY OF CONGRESS CATALOG CARD NUMBER:57-7942MANUFACTURED IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA \nWithdrawr \nFor Ted Gardinerand his Julias and Patricias, with love and other good O words.","cbCair1KFTwliZvA","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCair1KFTwliZvA","pdf",3573161,88,"English","en",105,"# The Wonderful O\n## Plot Overview\n## Key Characters and Themes","[{\"question\":\"Why does the owner of the ship hate the letter O?\",\"answer\":\"He hates the letter because his mother became wedged in a porthole on his ship, and the crew had to push her out rather than pull her in.\"},{\"question\":\"What is the name of the island visited by the pirates?\",\"answer\":\"The island is named Ooroo, which is inhabited by gentle people who initially do not resist the pirates.\"},{\"question\":\"What is the primary conflict in the story?\",\"answer\":\"The pirates decide to eradicate all words containing the letter 'O' from the island, reflecting the owner's personal grudge against the letter.\"}]","The Wonderful O | PDF",1791870454,136,{"code":4,"msg":82,"data":83},"ok",{"site_id":75,"language":74,"slug":84,"title":65,"keywords":85,"description":66,"schema_data":86,"social_meta":140,"head_meta":142,"extra_data":144,"updated_unix":145},"the-wonderful-o","",{"@graph":87,"@context":139},[88,102,122],{"@type":89,"itemListElement":90},"BreadcrumbList",[91,95,97,100],{"item":92,"name":93,"@type":94,"position":8},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":96,"name":9,"@type":94,"position":14},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/",{"item":98,"name":10,"@type":94,"position":99},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/story-novel/",3,{"item":101,"name":65,"@type":94,"position":19},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/the-wonderful-o/568347/",{"url":101,"name":65,"@type":103,"image":104,"author":109,"headline":65,"publisher":111,"fileFormat":114,"inLanguage":74,"description":66,"dateModified":115,"datePublished":116,"encodingFormat":114,"isAccessibleForFree":117,"interactionStatistic":118},"DigitalDocument",{"url":105,"@type":106,"width":107,"height":108},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/the-wonderful-o/568347.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":63,"@type":110},"Person",{"url":92,"name":112,"@type":113},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-10-18","2026-10-13",true,{"@type":119,"interactionType":120,"userInteractionCount":8},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":121},"ViewAction",{"@type":123,"mainEntity":124},"FAQPage",[125,131,135],{"name":126,"@type":127,"acceptedAnswer":128},"Why does the owner of the ship hate the letter O?","Question",{"text":129,"@type":130},"He hates the letter because his mother became wedged in a porthole on his ship, and the crew had to push her out rather than pull her in.","Answer",{"name":132,"@type":127,"acceptedAnswer":133},"What is the name of the island visited by the pirates?",{"text":134,"@type":130},"The island is named Ooroo, which is inhabited by gentle people who initially do not resist the pirates.",{"name":136,"@type":127,"acceptedAnswer":137},"What is the primary conflict in the story?",{"text":138,"@type":130},"The pirates decide to eradicate all words containing the letter 'O' from the island, reflecting the owner's personal grudge against the letter.","https://schema.org",{"og:url":101,"og:type":141,"og:title":65,"og:site_name":112,"og:description":66},"article",{"robots":143,"canonical":101},"index,follow",{"doc_id":61,"site_id":75},1792295136]
