Through precise mounted combat, he counters synchronized attacks, disables a horse, and defeats an opponent with his sword, leaving the battlefield momentarily silent amid fear and pursuit. When a second threat charges, Kael turns danger into advantage by using a thrown javelin and timing his strike to end the rider’s assault. After the fight, he attempts to communicate with the survivors, testing languages and intentions while the confrontation continues.","THE WHIP OF THE RED WELL \nThe Kael Brightsun Chronicles—Book Five \nZackery Arbela Copyright 2026 by Zackery Arbela \nThis ebook is licensed for your personal enjoyment only. \nIt may not be resold or redistributed without permission. \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nCHAPTER ONE \n“Tayahir!” The lead rider repeated the command as he spurred his horse, leveling the spear gripped in his right hand. To his right and his left were his fellow riders, one brandishing a spear as well, the other plucking a javelin from a quiver slung next to his saddle. Kael stopped, squinting against the glare. The three swept the plain in a shallow arc, spreading out like wolves chasing a stag. Predators, not shepherds. They wore loose, sand-colored tunics, and their faces were veiled in strips of red and blue. \nKael raised his sword. The blade was nearly five feet long, almost as wide as his hand at the hilt, then tapering to a sharp point. He held it high in the guard position, lightly balanced on his feet, watching the riders as they came in for the kill. \nThe first rider broke away, angling for his right. The other two mirrored, setting to pin him in a pincer. No shouts, no bravado; just the soft thump of hooves in the dry earth, and the grass whispering against the hafts of their lances. He let them come, slow at first, then kicking their mounts into a dead sprint. The sound came in waves: a growing thunder, wild and irregular, pounding in Kael’s chest. The rider to his right – the smallest of the three – lifted his javelin for a throw. Kael sidestepped, fast, and saw the javelin fly past, planting itself point first in the ground. \nHe turned. The second rider was already upon him, lance leveled at head height, horse’s teeth bared. Kael ducked, feeling the weapon slice hair at his crown. He lashed out with Brightsun, low and flat, and caught the horse in its foreleg. The animal shrieked, stumbled, and fell, crushing its rider. The leader pulled his horse to a halt ten yards off, yelling a curse Kael didn’t understand. \nThe boy came back around, not with a javelin, but with a wicked, hookbladed short sword. He drew it cleanly as his horse circled Kael. The sword’s edge shone blue in the sun, its curve almost elegant. Kael grinned despite himself. He watched the boy’s hands, the angle of the knees, the tilt of his head. They circled, each keeping just outside the other ’s kill radius. \nThe boy made his move: a blur, a shout, the sword aimed for Kael’s neck as the horse passed left. Kael waited until the last heartbeat, then slid inside the arc of the cut. The blade nicked his ear; hot blood slicked his jaw. He drove Brightsun up, through the ribs and into the boy’s chest, lifting him clear off the saddle. For a second, the world was quiet: the boy’s face was inches from Kael’s, mouth open, breathless with surprise. Then Kael jerked the blade free, and the corpse tumbled backward in a tangle of limbs. \nThe leader tried for another charge, saw the futility, and wheeled away. Kael looked for the third, found him struggling to free himself from beneath his horse. The man’s leg was a crushed mess, bones pushing at the skin. Kael walked over, sword trailing lines in the grass, and dispatched the wounded horse first. The man spoke something guttural, a curse or a prayer. \nKael shook his head.“Speak Cruabhin?” he tried. No answer. Just hate and pain and a hand clawing for the boy’s fallen sword, which Kael kicked aside. The man opened his mouth again, but before he could get another word out, Brightsun stabbed down and silenced him forever. \nA voice called out. Kael turned and saw the man who’d run past him reappear, poking his head above a low ridge. He shouted something in a language Kael didn't understand. \nThe remaining horseman turned around. He had circled wide, now cutting across the plain in pursuit of the runner, using the rolling land to close without being seen until the last moment.
