In a video statement, the Reform UK leader claimed to be the victim of a media stitch-up and insisted he’d “done nothing wrong” in accepting gifts from wealthy backers. All the main parties dismissed his resignation as a desperate stunt and said they would boycott the by-election.  \nFarage’s announcement followed the revelation that he had accepted various undeclared benefits in kind from his long-time aide George Cottrell, aka “Posh George”, a convicted fraudster. These included the provision of private security and  \nsocial-media staff, and the use of a five-storey  \nhouse near Buckingham Palace. Farage said that he hadn’t needed to register those benefits because they’d pre-dated his decision to run for Parliament, and that he was entitled to stay occasionally in the house of a friend. The Lib Dems referred the Cottrell revelations to Parliament’s standards watchdog, which is already looking into Farage’s failure to disclose a £5m gift from the cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne, received shortly before he was elected as an MP in 2024.  \nWhat the editorials said  \n“Farage is no stranger to political risks,” said The Daily Telegraph. Over his career, he has resigned as leader of his various parties four times, only to come back stronger. This latest gamble, though, may bea miscalculation. The rules state clearly that any donations made to someone in the year before they become an MP, that could “reasonably be thought by others”to be related to “political activities”, must be declared. Farage seems to think he should be immune from “legitimate media scrutiny”, said The Times. Quizzed about his £5m gift, he snapped that it was “not the public’s business”. He’s quite wrong about that.
