The president announced the surprise move last Friday, saying Russia would immediately supply 300,000 tonnes of the fuel “to the American and global marketplace”, with more to follow. Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, said it was a “weak decision” that would only help fund Russia’s war machine. In response, Trump accused Zelensky of making “problems for the world” by refusing to halt attacks on Russian refineries, and said it was “time for Ukraine to get a new president”. It also emerged that Washington had threatened to cut intelligence- \nTrump has “stooped to new lows” in a bid to placate voters ahead of next month’s midterm elections, said the FT. Having lambasted other nations for buying Russian fuel and threatened them with sanctions, he has now agreed to buy it himself, thereby undermining efforts to isolate Putin. The diesel deal is “a gross moral failure”, said The Times. With Ukraine facing its cruellest winter yet, this is the worst possible moment “to deliver a fillip to the Russian war effort”. It probably won’t even help the US. Given that Ukraine claims to have disabled more than half of Russia’s refining capacity, it’s unclear whether Putin will be able to supply the fuel. And even if he does, the quantities aren’t big enough to deliver a meaningful reduction in prices. He hopes that by scapegoating Zelensky – suggesting that \nZelensky said that the deal was “news” to him, but that he Ukraine’s leader is an obstacle to peace and is responsible \nwould support it if Moscow followed suit. However, Russia for raising the price of diesel in the US – he can divert voters’launched renewed strikes on Ukraine’s electricity grid within attention from the real cause of high fuel prices: “his own war hours of Trump’s announcement. On Tuesday night, a wave against Iran”. Many Americans may be taken in by this cynical of missile strikes cut power to households across Kyiv. gambit, but “the rest of the world can see what is going on”. \nWhat happened \nThe Greens fall flat \nLabour won a comfortable victory in the Holborn and St Pancras by-election last week, dealing a blow to the Green Party and its leader Zack Polanski. In the contest triggered by Keir Starmer’s resignation as an MP, Sagal Abdi-Wali, the Labour leader of Camden Council, won 45% of the vote to beat Polanski, her nearest challenger on 33%, by 3,364 votes. On a turnout of 39%, the Tories won 7%; Reform UK 6%; the Lib Dems 3% . \nThe result piled pressure on Polanski, who was already facing severe criticism over his failure to oppose the “Zionism is racism”motion passed at the Greens’ party conference in Brighton days earlier. Polanski missed the \nvote on the motion, which states that Israel should be replaced by a single Palestinian state, saying that he was busy campaigning for the by-election.
