(p.4) \nmid the noise generated by his \nAfailinlyzedgowaril mawrkiteht,Iranand, the paraAI dooms-day \nscenarios, President Trump has quietly ramped up his immigration crackdown, with ICE racking up a record 50,925 arrests in August. But there was nothing quiet about what happened on the streets of upper Manhattan last week (see U.S. Map, p.7). Oscar Belgal, an undocumented Dominican immigrant, had just picked up his 5-year-old son from school when masked men armed with assault-style rifles approached his vehicle. They were ICE officers, but how was Belgal to know? One was wearing a highvisibility construction vest. Belgal allegedly tried to accelerate away—not the first time he’d attempted to flee immigration officers. Instead of shooting out the tires, though, they shot him in the neck. Belgal’s young son saw it all from the back seat. \nBelgal, 28, has a rap sheet. He’s been arrested numerous times for drug dealing and larceny. Federal officials claim he’s with the Trinitarios gang, which has been linked to last year’s shooting of an off-duty customs officer in Manhattan.(Belgal denies having ties to the gang.) But while the MAGA world cheers another“thug” being swept off the streets, a child has been left deeply traumatized—still unable to speak, according to his mother. \nAnd the innocent victims are piling up. According to the Brookings Institution, more than 35,000 children have been, in essence, orphaned by ICE as their parents are disappeared into unmarked vans (or ambulances). Thousands of these kids—many of them U.S. citizens—have been dumped like hand-me-down clothing into the care of relatives, friends, foster families, or, in some cases, predatory monsters. Following his mother’s deportation in January, 2-year-old Orlin Hernandez Reyes was placed by ICE in the custody of his aunt’s estranged partner, Samuel Maldonado Erazo, who was known to be dangerous. Maldonado was charged in March with Orlin’s murder—the boy had been found with broken bones, lighter burns, and signs of sexual battery. (Maldonado has pleaded not guilty.) To many in the Trump administration, ICE’s cruelty is the point. And it won’t be easily forgotten. \nZach Schonbrun \nDeputy editor/Business \nBen Affleck (p.10) \nVisit us at [TheWeek.com](TheWeek.com) \n[For customer service go to](For customer service go to TheWeek.com/service)[ TheWeek.com/service](For customer service go to TheWeek.com/service)[ ](For customer service go to TheWeek.com/service)[or](ortheweek@cdsfulfillment.com)[theweek@cdsfulfillment.com](ortheweek@cdsfulfillment.com) \n[Renew a subscription at](Renew a subscription at RenewTheWeek.com)[ RenewTheWeek.com](Renew a subscription at RenewTheWeek.com)[ ](Renew a subscription at RenewTheWeek.com)[or give a gift at](or give a gift at GiveTheWeek.com)[ GiveTheWeek.com](or give a gift at GiveTheWeek.com) \nEditor-in-chief: Theunis Bates ([theweekeditors@futurenet.com](theweekeditors@futurenet.com)) Editor-at-large: William Falk \nExecutive editor","cbCaipkZdDZfwZ3v","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaipkZdDZfwZ3v","pdf",4920467,"English","# Contents\n## News\n## Arts\n## Leisure\n## Business\n## Other\n## Technology\n## Health & Science","[{\"question\":\"What core topics does this issue cover?\",\"answer\":\"It covers main news stories, controversies, people, briefing, columns, cartoons, plus arts, leisure, business, other sections, and includes technology and health \\u0026 science highlights.\"},{\"question\":\"What immigration-related case is described in the U.S. main story?\",\"answer\":\"The issue recounts an incident involving ICE officers and an undocumented father, describing a reported shooting and the child’s trauma, then discusses broader claims about children impacted by ICE custody actions.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the issue frame developments connected to Ukraine and Putin?\",\"answer\":\"It summarizes claims that Trump’s actions and dealings involving Putin and diesel relate to Ukraine’s access to U.S. intelligence and battlefield support, alongside discussion of diplomatic and military consequences.\"}]","The Week - October 23, 2026 - Volume 26 Issue 1310 | PDF",1792275920,101]
