It follows the narrator, Jiro, his troubled elder brother, and the brother's wife, and turns on the brother's tormented conviction that one human being can never truly reach the heart of another. \nThis is a complete edition of the novel. It combines two layers of translation. The English of Book One, \"Friend\" (sections 1–23), and of Book Four, \"Travail\" (sections 24–52, the body of Mr. H's letter), is drawn from a previously prepared translation. The remaining sections—the end of \"Friend\" (24–33), the whole of \"The Brother\" and \"After the Return,\"and the opening of \"Travail\" (1–23)—have been newly translated for this edition, restoring the large central portion of the novel, including the journey to Wakayama, the night of the storm, and the brother's slow unravelling, which the earlier text had left out. So far as we are aware, the complete four-book work is presented here in English for the first time in this combined form. \nThe new translation has been brought into line with the plain, modern register of the existing text. Throughout, the narrator's elder brother and his wife are named only by family relation—\"my brother,\" \"my sister-in-law\" \n—rather than by personal name, following the earlier translation. Japanese names are romanized without macrons. \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nContents \nA Note on This Edition \nI . Okada was a distant relative on my mother's side. I didn't know exactly how he was related to my mother, only remembering him as a distant relative. \nThere was a reason for visiting him right after arriving in Osaka. A week before coming here, I had made an arrangement with a friend to meet in the Osaka area within ten days, climb Mount Koya together, and if time allowed, go around to Ise and Nagoya. Since neither of us had a specific meeting place in mind, I ended up giving Okada's name and address to my friend. \"So, as soon as you arrive in Osaka, if I call there, I'll know right away whether you're there or not, right?\" my friend confirmed when we parted. I wasn't sure if Okada had a telephone, so I asked my friend to send a telegram or letter if there was no phone. \nMy friend planned to go to Suwa via the Kofu line, then return through Kiso before heading to Osaka. I intended to go straight to Kyoto via the Tokaido line, stay there for four or five days on business, and then set foot in Osaka. Having spent the planned days in Kyoto, I needed to visit Okada's house as soon as I left the station to hear news of my friend as quickly as possible. However, this was merely for my own convenience and completely separate from my mother's instructions I mentioned earlier. \nMy mother had specifically told me to visit Okada first when I got there, and had even given me a large tin of sweets as a gift, insisting on putting it in my bag despite it being a burden. This was partly due to her oldfashioned sense of propriety, but there was also a practical matter behind it. \nI'm the kind of person who doesn't even know how my mother and Okada are related in their family tree.
