Szeth navigated the room's remains, wine having been the great liberator from tradition and propriety among the Alethi elite. As he moved through the crowd, Szeth spotted Dalinar Kholin, the king's brother, slumped at a table, rejecting anyone who tried to convince him to leave with them. Szeth kept his distance from Elhokar, the heir, as he spoke with two men: a dark-skinned Azish man with an unusual pale patch on his cheek and a thinner, Alethi-looking man who glanced nervously over his shoulder. Szeth's attention was drawn instead to the drummers, their notes weaving through the air like Musicspren taking the form of spinning translucent ribbons. As he passed by the drummers, they noticed him but showed no sign of animosity or aggression. Yet, they prepared to leave along with the other Parshendi, a decision that made little sense but didn't warrant investigation from Szeth. At the room's edge, Szeth encountered rows of unwavering azure lights that housed sapphires infused with Stormlight, a use he deemed profane given its sacred nature. The potential for Alethi scholars to create new Shardblades sparked fear in him; if it happened, the world would likely be forever changed, with all nations from distant Thaylenah to towering Jah Keved adopting the Alethi language as their own. Despite their intoxication, there was a natural nobility about these Alethi people, a grandeur that made even the drunk look like generals on the battlefield. The women wore equally impressive attire: tightly fitted dresses with a longer left sleeve and intricately woven hair adorned with gold ribbons and gems that glowed with Stormlight. Szeth stepped out of the feasting chamber, passing beneath a doorway that led to the Beggars' Feast, an Alethi tradition where poor men and women received a feast equal to that of the king's guests. He encountered a man with a grey and black beard, who slumped in the doorway, speaking in a slurred tone about seeing him. Szeth moved past, noticing statues depicting the Ten Heralds from Vorin theology. He continued down a hallway adorned with statues, realizing one was missing-Shalash's statue. He wondered if King Gavilar's devotion to Vorin worship might be too strong. The hallway curved around the perimeter of the palace, surrounded by rock walls and a domed ceiling. Szeth wore white clothing, as his masters demanded, which he believed was bold and allowed him to stand out in the night. He walked toward the king's chambers, passing tiny flamespren dancing around torches on the walls. The light from Stormlight lamps caught his attention, and he reached for a sphere containing a brilliant sapphire. Two guards approached him, carrying spears, and Szeth prepared to face them, aware that true alliances could be fleeting. They were high-ranking citizens with ornate helms, even if they were darkeyed. The guard at the front gestured with his spear, blocking Szeth's path. \"Goon, now. This is no place for you,\" he said, his tan Alethi skin and thin mustache betraying his","cbCairdAZxRmSTtC","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCairdAZxRmSTtC","pdf",61854,"English","# Overview\n## Szeth’s Entry and Observations\n## Beggars' Feast and Palace Hallways\n## Confrontation with Guards\n## Using Lashings","[{\"question\":\"Who is the main character in the excerpt, and what role does he play?\",\"answer\":\"The excerpt centers on Szeth, who navigates the palace and responds to guards while acting under strict constraints tied to his identity and abilities.\"},{\"question\":\"What is Stormlight used for in the excerpt?\",\"answer\":\"Stormlight powers Szeth’s abilities, letting him manipulate force and redirect “down” through Lashings during the confrontation.\"},{\"question\":\"How do the guards’ attitudes and the setting affect the conflict?\",\"answer\":\"The guards challenge Szeth at the hallway entrance, and the formal palace environment amplifies the risk of his forbidden actions, turning the moment into a direct clash.\"}]","The Way of Kings - Book 1 - Chapter 10 | PDF"]
