The Saudi leadership, according to two officials who are part of Yemen’s Saudi-backed government, sees a battlefield victory as its only option. \nThe fighting in recent weeks is the latest chapter in a bitter civil war that has raged on-and-off for more than a decade. \n“It is clear that in the years when there was supposed peace, the Houthis and their allies in Iran were preparing for war,”said one of the Yemeni officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss security issues. “And this is not a war that will affect just Saudi Arabia and Yemen, but the entire world.” \nThe spiraling conflict is now the most volatile front in the sprawling regional conflagration that was unleashed when the United States and Israel attacked Iran in February, drawing retaliatory strikes by Tehran on Persian Gulf nations and by Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group, on Israel. \nWith weeks to go until the U.S. midterm elections, high fuel costs have turned voters against President Donald Trump’s Republican Party, and the White House is trying every lever to bring down costs, including lifting sanctions on Russian diesel exports — so far without success SEE SAUDI ARABIA ON A10 \nABDUL SABOOR/REUTERS \nRiot police are seen in Paris on Sunday, the day after more than halfa million people took to the streets throughout France to protest the policies of President Emmanuel Macron’s administration. President Donald Trump’s approval rating has fallen to a new low, and support for Democrats in the race for control of Congress is rising as inflationary pressures contribute to an acrid mood among voters, according to a Washington PostABC News-Ipsos poll. \nTrump’s approval among U.S. adults now stands at 33 percent, with 66 percent disapproving; \n52 percent said they disapprove strongly. That approval rating is four percentage points lower than in July and eight points lower than at this point last year. It’s lower than at any point in his \nfirst term. Among likely voters, Trump’s approval is 38 percent, with 62 percent disapproving. \nThe poll also finds that, for the first time in more than a decade, Democrats are seen as more trusted to deal with the economy. \nIn the competition for control of the House, Democrats hold an eight-point lead among registered and likely voters, an improvement for the party since The Post’s July poll, when the Democratic lead was three points with registered voters. \nTrump is central to Republicans’ struggles. In a separate question, the poll asked voters whether they would rather have a Democratic-led Congress acting as a check on Trump or a Republican one to support his SEE POLL ON A6 \nCruz tries to propel Paxton in Texas’s tight Senate race \nBY MATTHEW CHOI \nthe woodlands, texas—Sen.
