Initially, Than Kyi, who dreamed of opening grocery stores, found herself in a position to support her community not through business, but through her dedication to helping women and children and resolving family disputes. When her village needed a new leader, Than Kyi was unexpectedly chosen by the entire community. Despite her initial reluctance due to family responsibilities and low pay, she accepted the role at age 45, driven by a sense of duty and the trust placed in her by her villagers. In her leadership, Than Kyi focuses on two key areas: actively listening to and resolving her villagers' problems, and representing their needs in crucial meetings with the government. She advocates for essential improvements such as better roads, markets, and public spaces for young people. Notably, Than Kyi is the sole female village leader in Kayah State and one of the few women in Myanmar holding such positions. Her story serves as a powerful testament to female leadership, emphasizing that women can perform leadership roles just as effectively as men. The document also includes prompts for readers to reflect on their own lives, encouraging them to write stories about their happiest moments, passions, overcome challenges, future aspirations, and dreams. It also encourages readers to draw their own portraits.","The Village Leader Alyson Curro Nan Hom Noon \nLittle Than Kyi daydreamed about opening big grocery stores . \nShe imagined many aisles with many shelves filled with every food, drink, and sweet she had ever heard of. \nThis was her dream, because after years of conflict, there was not much of anything in her Kayah village, including food. \nThan Kyi never opened a grocery store, but she did find other ways to support her village. She spent many years helping women and children, and resolving family arguments. \nThen one day, it was time to elect a new leader of the village. \nTo Than Kyi’s surprise, the entire village wanted her to be their leader. \nAt first, Than Kyi said no—she had six children in school, and being the leader did not pay much. \nBut the villagers insisted. They trusted her. \nThan Kyi felt it was her duty, so at age 45, she \nbecame her village’s leader. \nThan Kyi does two big things in her job. First, she listens to her villagers’ problems, and she finds a way to fix them. \nSecond, she represents her village in important meetings with the government. She tells the government her village needs better roads, markets, and public spaces for young people. \nThan Kyi is the only female village leader in all of Kayah State. \nIn fact, she is one of the very few Myanmar women serving as village and ward leaders. The good news is that more and more women are getting involved and are showing that they, too, can be great leaders. \n”This is not a man’s job. A woman can do this job just as well,” Than Kyi often says. ”I am proof.” \n7 \nUse these prompts to write your own story on a piece of paper. \nWhen are you happiest? \nWhat do you love doing? \nLife can be tough sometimes. Describe a tough moment in your life that you overcame . Tell a story of your future . What do you dream of doing? \nOn a piece of paper, draw your portrait.","cbCaiizhs1bW9hJf","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiizhs1bW9hJf","pdf",467921,11,"English","en",105,"# The Village Leader\n## Than Kyi's Dream\n## Becoming a Leader\n## Leadership Responsibilities\n## Breaking Barriers\n## Inspiring Others","[{\"question\":\"Who is Than Kyi and what is her story?\",\"answer\":\"Than Kyi is a woman from Kayah State, Myanmar, who became her village's leader.
