Her parents have to live far away as they work long hours in the city.
lolo: grandfather
lola: grandmother
They have a beautiful home in Iriga. They live on a mountain surrounded by nature . There are trees, ponds, fish, vast cornfields, and more than enough fruits and vegetables ripe for the picking.
You have to walk a mile to get to Tikay’s village. The path can get slippery, bumpy, and tiresome . The path is even harder to walk when it’s flooded by water from the spillways, and many people can’t cross it. Tikay can get lucky, sometimes a kind soul gives her a freeride to town . Going downhill can be slow, but Tikay still has fun.
This faraway village is called luyo, because you need to pass a pond before reaching Tikay’s grandparents’ home. At home, fried tilapia always awaits Tikay in a basket hanging by the roof. Every morning, Tikay and her cat visit the fish pond to feed the fish. The sight of fish swimming for the food entertains them for a long time.
tilapia: a type of freshwater fish
Before lunch, Tikay joins Lola in the rice fields. They bring tilapia to share with the farmers.
After lunch, Tikay helps Lolo Papo take care of Laki, his trusty carabao that plows the fields. He even rides Laki to the fields to bring back his harvest.
carabao: water buffalo
After dinner, the village becomes silent except for the crickets in the fields. The only thing to do is listen to the radio playing songs like Gabi ng Lagim, Simatar, and Matud Nila . The night grows darker and darker . Tikay doesn’t dare wander outside, afraid of ghosts that might be lying in wait.
Some days Tikay is full of sadness because she misses her parents. Those days she sits by the window and cries. She hates when her Mama and Papa have to leave after they come to visit. When they say their goodbyes she feels like holding onto them so they can’t leave.
On long school vacations, Lolo takes Tikayto the city to spend time with her mama and papa. Tikay loves being with her parents, but she doesn’t love the city. After a few days in the city, she always wants to go back to the village where it’s peaceful.","cbCaisb9sP4bI1EO","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaisb9sP4bI1EO","pdf",2847262,17,"English","# Tikay’s Village Life
## Visits, Work, and Evening Quiet
# The City and Tikay’s Longing","[{"question":"Who does Tikay live with in the village of Luyo, and what is the village like?","answer":"Tikay lives with her lolo and lola in Luyo, a small village in Iriga with nature, ponds, fish, cornfields, and abundant fruits and vegetables."},{"question":"What activities does Tikay do with her grandparents each day?","answer":"She feeds the fish in the pond in the mornings, helps in the rice fields before lunch while sharing tilapia with farmers, and helps care for Lolo Papo’s carabao, Laki, after lunch."},{"question":"How does Tikay feel about the city compared to the village?","answer":"Tikay enjoys being with her parents in the city, but she dislikes the city and after a few days always wants to return to the peaceful village."}]","The Village and the City | PDF",1789894113,26]
