It allowed me to specialise in subjects of my interest such as Fashion and Media and gave me the ability to work throughout the year towards a collection of work suitable for my university folio applications. Whilst stressful at times, the course has encouraged me to take a proactive and adaptive approach to my learning throughout the final years of my schooling. \nSienna \nI opted for the VCE because it gave me the ability to choose from a wide variety of subjects in areas I enjoy, especially in the humanities. The subjects I chose have helped me to create a pathway to university and prepare me for the course I want to pursue. Additionally, VCE provided me the ability to do a Year 12 subject in Year 11, which can make Year 12 less stressful, and allows me to study a total of six Year 12 subjects. \nTom \nAs an international student, VCE has been a great option as it provides a range of subjects to choose from that I feel will provide me with a strong understanding for my future studies. I really enjoy the subjects I’m undertaking, and I love the structure of VCE. The way the curriculum is laid out makes it easy to organise, understand and plan my knowledge of the different concepts we’re learning. \nCindy \nVCE allowed me flexibility to choose more of the subjects that I am most interested in and that I aim to pursue in my tertiary studies. Doing five subjects allowed me more time to meet with my teachers outside of class to enhance my learning and the time to thoroughly revise each subject, gaining a deeper understanding of the content and leading to better academical results overall. \nThomas \nContents \nWhat is the VCE? 2 Some common terms used in the VCE 2 Is the VCE right for me? 4 What VCE units can I study at Carey? 5 What is expected of a VCE student at Carey? 5 How many subjects will I study each year? 6 Can I accelerate a subject? 6 Can I study a subject that is not offered at Carey? 7 What vocational or VET subjects can I study? 8 Can I study a Higher Education subject? 8 Can I repeat a subject? 9 Is it possible to change my subjects? 9 Who can study English as an Additional Language (EAL)? 10 What special consideration is available? 10 How is the VCE regarded interstate and overseas? 11 Can I get credit for overseas high school study? 11 Where can I learn more about the VCE? 12 \nWhat is the VCE? \nThe Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) is the final high school certificate that most students in Victoria receive when they complete their secondary education. The VCE opens a wide range of pathways to further study and to employment, both in Australia and internationally. \nThe VCE is administered by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA), which is responsible for curriculum, assessment and reports. \nThe VCE at Carey is very broad with well over 30 studies, or subjects, available to choose from in Year 11 and close to 40 different studies in Year 12. We also support students’ Vocational Education and Training and University Extension subjects – at Carey students are offered a whole range of ways to find an interesting, challenging and rewarding pathway through their VCE studies. \nWe also offer students the option to complete their VCE program over three years, although the major component of the VCE is undertaken when students are in Years 11 and 12. \nThis booklet is for all prospective VCE students, and their families, who are unfamiliar with what the VCE has to offer. It explains some of the main aspects of the VCE and suggests where you can find out more detailed or specific information. \nSome common terms used in the VCE \nATAR (Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank) \nThe ATAR is a student’s overall ranking on a scale of 0 to 99.95, in intervals of 0.05, that compares a student to all other students who completed VCE in the same year.
