TRADITION\n\nW.CLARK GILPIN* \nTHE TRADITION of theological liberalism, beginning with Fried-rich Schleiermacher in early nineteenth century Germany, has continually maintained a close association with, and ap-preciation for, critical historical research. The application of his-torical and literary methods of criticism to the Christian faith andits teachings has,in fact, been generally considered one of the iden-tifying characteristics of liberal thought. This immersion in histori-cal studies has had a deep effect upon the actual content of liberaltheology because it has tended to make the theologian acutelyaware of the conditional and relative meaning of any statements offaith which he might make. Thus, the subjective element of the per-son's relation to reality,or to religious objects, has been stressed, and the method by which one arrives at statements of belief has,in turn, been very seriously considered.Liberal theology has againand again returned to the assertion that human perception is nevercompletely objective, but instead reflects the historical context andindividual self-understanding of the perceiver. \nThe beginning point for liberal theological reflection has tended, therefore,to be the self-understanding of the individual.Whatelements in human existence cause the person to think or react incharacteristic ways? What linguistic images best convey certaintypes of experience? What experiences are basic to human exist-ence?Such questions as these have begun theological reflection be-cause they have led the Christian thinker to ask what factors in ex-perience religious language and symbolism seek to describe, toask what aspects of human life can or must be dealt with in reli-gious terms. \nLEXINGTON THEOLOGICAL QUARTERLY \nFor the liberal tradition, the doctrines of the Church have thusbeen understood as a series of relative formulations expressing thereligious understandings of particular times and places. The job ofthe theologian is to test critically the validity of these historical doc-trines and restate them in ways which speak clearly to his contem-poraries.To better understand this theological process this paperwill attempt to trace out the understandings of a particular doctrineat three different points in the development of the liberal tradition. \nThe doctrine which has been selected for this study is the con-ception of the divinity of Christ, because,as will be indicated be-low,it both sharply delineates the typical liberal theological methodin doctrinal reconstruction and also exposes some basic,problem-atic issues in liberal thought. The thinkers chosen—Schleiermacher,Ritschl, and Schubert Ogden—represent not only different periodsin the history of modern theology, but also three different methodsof dealing with the doctrine under discussion. While each wouldagree with the basic liberal premise that theological language ex-presses the understandings of the historically conditioned individ-ual,each has a different program to develop out of this single be-ginning point.Their respective theologies are thus examples of theprinciple of historical relativism which they each presuppose. \nDoctrine must be continually revised both to maintain the in-tegrity of its earlier intent and to address a situation for whi","cbCaipzZvTLeIbuc","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaipzZvTLeIbuc","pdf",2919747,36,"English","#
