Today, CNC-machined parts can be found in a varietyof different industries, from aerospace to automotive to medical. \nThe beginnings of CNC technologies can be traced back to a few different pointsin history. The first modern machining tools appeared in 1775 when industrialistsdeveloped a boring tool that allowed manufacturers to produce steam engine cylinderswith more consistent degrees of accuracy and precision. \nThe technological forebears of modern computingappeared earlier in the century, however, emergingfrom the textiles industry. In 1725, Basile Bouchonbegan using a system of punched holes in papertape to encode data. Decades later in 1805, JosephMarie Jacquard refined the process, swappingout the paper tape for sturdy punch cards. Whentied in a sequence, the punch cards directed howthe fabric was added to the loom, simplifying theprocess and providing one of the first examples ofprogramming. This machine, the Jacquard loom, isin a way the forebear of our modern computing andautomation solutions. \nThis guide to all things related to CNC machiningwill walk through how modern CNC machiningprocesses work, including material options, design \nconsiderations, cost drivers, and more. \nJacquard loom \n© 2023 Sybridge Technologies, Inc. CNC milling andCNC turning are two common examples of 3-axis machining. \n3-axis CNC milling involves fixing the block of material — also called the workpiece or“blank”— with a vice or machine bed. This holds the workpiece stationary as cuttingtools and rotating drills, attached to a central spindle, make cuts to remove materialand shape the final component. The 3-axis CNC milling machines are easy to programand operate and can be used to create most parts with simple geometric designs. \nSince the cutting tools and drills are limited tothree axes, some design features or areas of theblank may be difficult to complete or reach \n(e.g., unconventional shapes or deep, narrowcavities) . However, multiple setups can helporient the workpiece for the machines to reachthese features. While almost every 3-axismachining job has more than one setup per part, too many setups per part can quickly increaseproduction costs. Processing geometricallycomplex parts can, for instance, requireoperators to manually reposition workpieces, which can impact processing speed, \nincrease labor-related costs, and create moreopportunities for human error. \nZ \nY \nX \n3-axis CNC milling \n© 2023 Sybridge Technologies, Inc.
