The drawings and first manuscript were the work of conservation architect Anthony Short of the British Executive Services Overseas. His trained and talented eye and hard work got the project well under way. Architectural historian Sylvia Shorto organised, edited and rewrote the text around Tony's wonderful drawings, and added to the content. \nSteve Jackson and Erica Smith of the Department of Planning and Steve Conway of the Bermuda National Trust oversaw the management of the project and offered the resources of their respective organizations. Steve Conway also supplemented Tony Short's drawings in the later stages of the book. Margie Lloyd helped in many logistical and practical ways. David L. White edited, Gerry Brashier proof-read, and LaVerne Richardson designed the book and took photographs. \nInformation for the book was gathered from a number of sources. Warmest thanks are due to all the people who shared their knowledge of building practices in Bermuda. In particular thanks go to John Adams, Colin Campbell, Gil DeSousa, Edward Harris, Brendan Hollis, Larry Mills, Henry Ming, Andrew Trimingham and Jordy Walker for advice and assistance. Most particularly thanks go to Sandy Frith Brown who spent numerous hours with both Tony Short and Sylvia Shorto and also went through the draft manuscript. Many others opened their houses to let the authors in to look at construction and condition. Without them this book could never have been written. \nIn addition to Tony Short's drawings, the book is illustrated with photographs. We are grateful to Alfred Aguiar, the Bermuda Martime Museum, Chris Grimes, Dr. and Mrs. A.C. Hollis Hallett, Robin Judah, Charles Lloyd, and Roland Skinner for permission to reproduce theirs. \nTHE TRADITIONAL BUILDING GUIDE \nAdvice For Preserving Bermuda )s Architectural Heritage \nABOUT THIS \nBOOK \nCHAPTER I \nSETTING, LANDSCAPE, \nl \nI STORY \nCHAPTER2 \nGETTING \nSTARTED \nLooking at a Bermudian house Researching your project \nThe role of archaeology \nThe role of the architect \nHelp from the Planning Department If you live in St. George's Why not just demolish? \nCHAPTER3 \nLIMESTONE, LIME AND \nMORTAR \nLimestone \nTraditional Lime Mortars \nII \n12 \nl4 \nl 5 \nl 6 \nl 6 \nl 7 \nl 7 \n19 \n19 \n21 \nCHAPTER 4 \nBUILDING WITH \nSTONE 27 \nWall 28 \nRoof","cbCait2JXDlcESh2","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCait2JXDlcESh2","pdf",20400984,174,"English","# About this book\n# Chapter I - Setting, landscape, story\n# Chapter 2 - Getting started\n# Chapter 3 - Limestone, lime and mortar\n# Chapter 4 - Building with stone\n# Chapter 5 - Building with wood\n# Chapter 6 - Paint and colour\n# Chapter 7 - Necessary can\n# Chapter 8 - A look at Bermuda's building styles\n# Chapter 9 - Learn some more, organizations, books & other useful connections\n# Glossary of terms\n# Index","[{\"question\":\"What is the purpose of The Traditional Building Guide?\",\"answer\":\"It documents Bermuda’s traditional building practices and offers advice for preserving Bermuda’s architectural heritage.\"},{\"question\":\"What topics are covered in the early chapters?\",\"answer\":\"The guide explains how to assess a Bermudian house, how to research a project, and the roles of archaeology and the architect, including planning department help.\"},{\"question\":\"Which materials and construction methods are discussed?\",\"answer\":\"It covers limestone, traditional lime mortars, building with stone (including walls, roofs, water storage, chimneys, and fireplaces) and building with wood (cedar, roofs frames, floors, staircases, doors, and windows).\"}]","The Traditional Building Guide - Advice for Preserving Bermuda's Architectural Heritage | PDF",268]
