And that’s before the sunlight hits him.  \nThe curtains are pulled back like a plaster from tender skin, and the wound is still raw. His mother ’s to blame, but she’s a mare without mercy, and doesn’t stop there.  \n‘Ah, Ma!’  \n‘Get up, you lazy bollocks. It’s near twelve.’  \n‘It’s me day off – and what’s all that noise?’  \n‘You mean apart from the drink still swilling in your head? That’s the parade. You remember the parade? - that thing you were celebrating last night until all hours.’  \n‘Give it a rest, will you?’ That’s like asking a hungry bear to stop charging. Brady kicks his feet out of bed before she can do her worst. The toilet is ten yards away, might as well be a mile. It’s even harder with an audience. ‘Please, Ma – I’m up.’ She relents, and slams her way downstairs, still making a point. He reaches the toilet in one piece, but discovers that Saturday night still has something to say. He bids it a final farewell, and it’s just as well, because the system can’t take much more flushing.  \nBreakfast is lunch, and she’s fetched up a plate-full of burnt-to-hell sausage and bacon – all courtesy of the butchers where he works. He’s in danger of keeling, but he fears her wrath more, and manages a mouthful or two. Keeping it down is a whole different matter. If only she had other offspring to worry about, he might have been able to keep the rod off his back. He’s eighteen now, about time he was making tracks. She doesn’t need looking after, she’s as sprightly as an urban fox, and twice as sly. A butcher ’s assistant doesn’t get much of a cut, but to be honest, Bosco is a fair boss, and there’s a certain satisfaction in carving joints from carcasses. Bosco, though, is also a robust fifty-something, and won’t be visiting the human abattoir anytime soon. Therefore, prosperity is very far off.  \nShe’s dressed for the occasion, and ready to leave.  \n‘Clean all that up before you leave – and don’t go back to bed.’  \n‘I won’t. I want to see the parade, too.’  \n‘More celebrating, is it?’  \n‘I didn’t drink that much.’ He did.‘And I have work tomorrow, don’t I?’Which means nothing.  \n‘Well, make sure you do get to work tomorrow. We can’t afford you losing that job.’ We? Off she goes, off to church, off to pay her respects to Him Upstairs, as she calls him. Then she’ll call into the Clock for a small rum and a natter.  \nBrady thinks about going back to bed, but his room smells nasty, and he opens a window. The noise from the parade assaults him. What’s the saint’s name again, the reason for all this fuss? Thomas Street is filling up fast, cheap floats taking their places in the procession before the official kick-off. Suppose he better get down there and show his face.
