oftelling his stories in words,he uses pictures.The quickest,easiest and most accurate method of making the pictures is byphotography.For that reason you should learn to do reallygood photography.  \nThis does not mean that you must necessarily become aprofessional photographer any more than a writer must be-come a typist.Just as the writer can operate a typewriteras well as a typist while using words to far better advantagethan any typist.just so you will learn to do as good camerawork as a professional photographer while using the pictorialelements to far better advantage than a professional photog-rapher would.  \nIn the past there have been some very successful writersof illustrated articles who hired a professional photographerto make illustrations.The result was that,usually,the writingwas much better than the pictures.This was during the ageof transition.Years ago everything had to be properly ex-pressed in words.Great stress was laid upon language.Con-versation was cultivated as an art.Then came the greatchange with the trend toward pictures.Pictures used liberally,were such a novelty that any kind of picture was acceptable.Today the standard is being rapidly raised.There is a groupof writers of illustrated articles being trained—of which groupyou are a member—who are being trained to make picturesof such quality that they assume the major importance withthe writing secondary.If you compare magazines of todaywith those of five years ago you will find it easy to notice thegreat improvement in the quality of the pictures used.  \n# JOURNALISTIC PHOTOGRAPHY\n\nAfter a cycle of time involving hundreds of centuries,weare again swinging toward an era of“picture-vriting.”Asyou have learned,the first picture writing was crude and gaveway to language because words could express ideas morefluently than the pictures then used.Today we are swingingtoward pictures because it is the natural method of expression,and because pictures made by modern photographic methodscan tell more,tell it more simply,tell it more accurately tha1could be done by volumes of words.Mankind is returningto his natural medium of communication,and those who aretrained to make pictures which are suitable for communica-tion—pictures that tell stories clearly—vill receive the re-wards they deserve.  \nThe first step in training for making such
