It introduces the core grammar (XdY), then shows how modifiers work after dice are rolled and why order matters. It contrasts applying modifiers to totals versus individual dice, lists standard die sides, and teaches advanced notation such as keep/drop, advantage and disadvantage. Learntoread them once and you will never again bethe player \nwho asks what to roll. \nThe Tongue of Dice \nY \nOU HAVE SEEN IT ON A SPELL SCROLL, CARVED INTO A monster’s plinth, scratched in the margin of somebody’s house rule: 1d20 + 5. Four symbols and a promise. Everyone else at the table reads it without pausing, the way you read a road sign. This is how they do it. \nDice notation says how many dice to roll, what kind, and what happens to the result. It is terse on purpose—it has to be spoken across a table in one breath, over five people arguing about a door. \nThe Core Formula \nEvery roll is built on the same three characters, in the same order. \nXdY \nX How many dice to roll. Leave it off entirely and it means one. \nd Short for die. The only letter in the whole system. Y How many sides each of those dice has. \nSo 1d6 is one six-sided die, 2d8 is two eight-sided dice added together, and d20 and 1d20 say exactly the same thing. \nThat is the entire grammar. Everything after this is a modifier hung off it. \nThe Dice ata Glance \nSeven dice sit in a standard set, and each has ajob it does more than any other. You learn them by touch long before you learn them by name. \nThe Standard Set \nAdding Modifiers \nMost rolls carry a modifier—a flat number applied after the dice have spoken, never before. \nRoll first. Then add. The dice decide the outcome. The modifier only adjusts it. \n 1d20 + 5 You roll a 14. Your result is 19. \n2d6 + 3 The dice come up 4 and 2. Your result is 9. 1d8 - 1 You roll a 6. Your result is 5. \nThe order matters more than it sounds. A player who adds first and rolls second will eventually argue that a natural 20 was really a 15, and nobody wants to be at that table. \nTotal, or Each Die? \nSome tools—DnD Dice Roller among them—will let you apply a modifier to the total or to each die. Two readings of the same eight characters, and they do not agree. \nThe Same Notation, Two Answers \n 2d6 + 3 applied to the total: roll 4 and 2, add 3 once. Nine. \n2d6 + 3 applied to each die: roll 4 and 2, add 3 twice. Twelve. \nRead the spell text carefully. Almost every effect in fifth edition modifies the total—but the handful that do not are, without exception, the ones that end fights. \nDie Sides Where you meet it \n d4 four dagger damage, healing potions, caltrops d6 six shortsword, sneak attack, ability scores d8 eight longsword, most hit dice, cure wounds d10 ten heavy crossbow, half a percentile roll \nd12 twelve greataxe, barbarian hit dice \nd20 twenty every attack, save, and check \nd100 percentile wild magic, loot tables, fate \n2 \nPART 1 | THE GRAMMAR \nKeep, Drop, and Reroll \nPast the basic form, notation starts picking up instructions—little suffixes that tell you what todo with the dice once they have landed. Four of them cover almost everything you will meet in play. \n4d6dl1 Roll four six-sided dice, drop the lowest, keep the rest. The classic ability-score method. It drags the average up to 12.24—which is why your first-level fighter feels heroic and a straight 3d6 character feels like somebody’s unlucky cousin. \n2d20kh1 \nRoll two twenty-sided dice, keep the highest. This is advantage, and it is worth roughly +3.3 on the average roll—bigger than any proficiency bonus you will ever have. \n2d20kl1 \nRoll two, keep the lowest. This is disadvantage, and it costs you exactly what advantage gives. \n6x4d6dl1 \nDo 4d6dl1 six times over. An entire character’s ability scores in nine characters of notation. \nThat last line is the point of the whole system. Nine characters, spoken in one breath, and everyone at the table knows precisely what is about to happen. \nA Creature to Practise On \nEvery number on a stat block is notation, including the ones that do not look like it. Read this one and you can read any of them. \nGoblin \nSmall humanoid (goblinoid), neutral evil \nArmor Class 15 (leather ","cbCaidksguHuQPyN","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaidksguHuQPyN","pdf",1368231,"English","# The Tongue of Dice\n## The Core Formula\n## The Dice at a Glance\n# Part 1 | The Grammar\n## Keep, Drop, and Reroll\n## A Creature to Practise On\n# Part 2 | The Instructions\n## The Whole Language\n## Quick Reference\n## Try It\n## Three Things Worth Knowing","[{\"question\":\"What does the core dice notation XdY mean?\",\"answer\":\"XdY specifies X dice to roll and each die has Y sides.
