Only one bridge spans the water, but a mean water spirit lives underneath and demands the goats as dinner. Each goat tries to persuade the spirit using its size and the promise that another brother will be the next to cross. The story emphasizes clever dialogue, suspense, and a lesson in dealing with threats.","The Three Goats \nEnglish Traditional Story \nThe Three Goats \nA traditional story retold by Carol Smith \nThis story is from 'Stories for Children Book 6' used in the SIL MLE curriculum in Cameroon \nImages by MBANJI Bawe Ernest and Kate Pedley © 2019 SIL \nCameroon. \nEnglish \nUnited Kingdom \nCopyright © 2019, SIL Cameroon \n[http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/](http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/)[ ](http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/)[You may not use this work for commercial purposes. The three goats lived on a bare rocky hill. \nNot far away was a river . In rainy season the river was wide and deep. The three goats looked across the river and saw tall grass that was good to eat. \nThe goats wanted to cross the river to eat the grass . There was only one bridge across the river . \nUnder that bridge lived a mean, hungry water spirit. He had eyes as big as buckets and a nose as long as a millet stalk. \nFirst the smallest goat started across the bridge. His little feet went \ntap-tap-tap on the bridge. The mean, hungry water spirit heard the noise . \n“Who is that tapping across my bridge?”shouted the water spirit. \n“It is only me, a very little goat,” said the smallest goat in a tiny little voice . \n“I will eat you for my dinner,” said the mean, hungry water spirit. \n“Oh, please don’t,” said the little goat,“I am much too small. My brother is coming across the bridge next, he will make a much better dinner .” \nSo the little goat was allowed to cross the bridge. He began to eat the good, long grass . \nNext the middle-sized goat started across the bridge. His feet went stampstamp-stamp on the bridge. The mean, hungry water spirit heard the noise . \n“Who is that stamping across my bridge?” shouted the water spirit. \n“It is only me, a middle-sized goat,” said the goat in a normal voice . \n“I will eat you for my dinner,” said the mean, hungry water spirit. \n“Oh, please don’t,” said the middle-sized goat,“I am too small. My brother is coming across the bridge next, he will make a much better dinner .”","cbCaic14HFOQi8LA","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaic14HFOQi8LA","pdf",296169,20,"English","en",105,"# Story Setup\n## The River and the Bridge\n# The Water Spirit\n## First Goat Crossing\n## Second Goat Crossing","[{\"question\":\"Why do the three goats want to cross the river?\",\"answer\":\"They want to reach tall grass on the other side that is good to eat.\"},{\"question\":\"What danger prevents the goats from crossing freely?\",\"answer\":\"A mean, hungry water spirit lives under the bridge and threatens to eat any goat that crosses.\"},{\"question\":\"How does each goat try to avoid being eaten?\",\"answer\":\"The goat explains that it is too small and suggests that its brother is coming next, implying the spirit will have a better meal then.\"}]",1784316814,31,{"code":4,"msg":29,"data":30},"ok",{"site_id":23,"language":22,"slug":31,"title":13,"keywords":32,"description":14,"schema_data":33,"social_meta":84,"head_meta":86,"extra_data":88,"updated_unix":26},"the-three-goats-traditional-story","",{"@graph":34,"@context":83},[35,52,66],{"@type":36,"itemListElement":37},"BreadcrumbList",[38,42,46,49],{"item":39,"name":40,"@type":41,"position":11},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":43,"name":44,"@type":41,"position":45},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":47,"name":12,"@type":41,"position":48},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/story-novel/",3,{"item":50,"name":13,"@type":41,"position":51},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/the-three-goats-traditional-story/92451/",4,{"url":50,"name":13,"@type":53,"author":54,"headline":13,"publisher":56,"fileFormat":59,"inLanguage":22,"description":14,"dateModified":60,"datePublished":60,"encodingFormat":59,"isAccessibleForFree":61,"interactionStatistic":62},"DigitalDocument",{"name":9,"@type":55},"Person",{"url":39,"name":57,"@type":58},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-07-17",true,{"@type":63,"interactionType":64,"userInteractionCount":4},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":65},"ViewAction",{"@type":67,"mainEntity":68},"FAQPage",[69,75,79],{"name":70,"@type":71,"acceptedAnswer":72},"Why do the three goats want to cross the river?","Question",{"text":73,"@type":74},"They want to reach tall grass on the other side that is good to eat.","Answer",{"name":76,"@type":71,"acceptedAnswer":77},"What danger prevents the goats from crossing freely?",{"text":78,"@type":74},"A mean, hungry water spirit lives under the bridge and threatens to eat any goat that crosses.",{"name":80,"@type":71,"acceptedAnswer":81},"How does each goat try to avoid being eaten?",{"text":82,"@type":74},"The goat explains that it is too small and suggests that its brother is coming next, implying the spirit will have a better meal then.","https://schema.org",{"og:url":50,"og:type":85,"og:title":13,"og:site_name":57,"og:description":14},"article",{"robots":87,"canonical":50},"index,follow",{"doc_id":7,"site_id":23},{"code":4,"msg":5,"data":90},[91,94,98,102,107,112,117,122,126,129,133],{"id":11,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":12,"show_sort_weight":92,"slug":93},90,"story-novel",{"id":45,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":95,"show_sort_weight":96,"slug":97},"Literature",80,"literature",{"id":51,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":99,"show_sort_weight":100,"slug":101},"Exam",70,"exam",{"id":103,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":104,"show_sort_weight":105,"slug":106},5,"Comic",60,"comic",{"id":108,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":109,"show_sort_weight":110,"slug":111},6,"Technology",50,"technology",{"id":113,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":114,"show_sort_weight":115,"slug":116},7,"Healthcare",40,"healthcare",{"id":118,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":119,"show_sort_weight":120,"slug":121},8,"Research & Report",30,"research-report",{"id":123,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":124,"show_sort_weight":20,"slug":125},9,"Religion & Spirituality","religion-spirituality",{"id":20,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":127,"show_sort_weight":20,"slug":128},"World Cup","world-cup",{"id":130,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":131,"show_sort_weight":130,"slug":132},10,"Lifestyle","lifestyle",{"id":134,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":135,"show_sort_weight":103,"slug":136},19,"General","general"]
