THE THIRTY-NINEARTICLES REVISED\n\nBY \nC.B.MOSS,D.D \nLONDON \nA.R.MOWBRAY &Co.LIMITED \nFirst published in 1961 \n## FOREWORD\n\nTHE Dean of St.Paul’s(Dr.W.R.Matthews)has said thathe wishes for a revision of the Thirty-nine Articles.Thisbook is an attempt to show what such a revision might belike. It has no official authority, and represents only thepersonal opinions of the author.I have never found itdifficult to give general assent to the Articles, but they arecertainly obsolete and in some ways misleading, especiallyto foreigners. \nThe purpose of the Notes is to explain the reasons forthe changes which I have made.I have rendered theArticles into modern English(except Article 35,for areason which will appear later, and ‘of'in the titles, whichthough archaic is sufficiently current to be acceptable).Archaic language, such as Tudor English,is suitable inLiturgy,as long as it is easy to understand. But it is outof place in a modern version of the Articles,in whicheverything ought to be clearly stated, and obscurity andambiguity avoided. If anything cannot be said plainly, andwith only one meaning,it had better not be said at all. \nArticles I3(Works before Justification),I7(Predestina-tion),29(Wicked Communicants),and 35(Homilies)havebeen omitted:see Notes. They are replaced by Articles I5(The Blessed Virgin),21(The Anglican Communion),22(The Roman See),and 35(Ordination). \nC.B.M. \nWINCHESTERJuly,I961 \n, \n# THE THIRTY-NINEARTICLES REVISED\n\n## NOTES\n\nArticle I:‘Eternal'is a better translation of aionios than‘everlasting,'because it does not suggest endless time. \nArticle 2:\"To reconcile His Father to us,'a phrase fromthe Augsburg Confession, has no basis in Scripture. It iswe, not God who cannot change, that need to be reconciled. The words bilasmos, bilasterion, translated Propitiation,'mean the removal of that in us which hinders reconciliation(Rom.3.25;I St.Jobn 2.2,4.Io). \nArticle 3:'Hell'here means the abode of the dead(Hades),Acts 2.3I,etc.,not the abode of the lost(Gehenna),St.Mark 9.47,etc. \nArticle 4:No change. \n## THE THIRTY-NINE ARTICLES REVISED\n\n### Article r.Of Faith in the Holy Trinity\n\nThere is but one living and true God,eternal, withoutbody, parts,or passions,of infinite power, wisdom, andgoodness, the maker and preserver of all things bothvisible and invisible. And in unity of this Godhead thereare Three Persons,of one essence, power, and eternity, the Father, the Son,and the Holy Ghost. \n### Article 2.Of the Word or Son of God,who was made true man\n\nThe Son,who is the Word of the Father, begottenfrom everlasting of the Father, the true and eternal God,of one essence with the Father, took man's nature in thewomb of the Blessed Virgin,of her essence;so that twowhole and perfect natures, that is to say,the Godhead andmanhood, were joined together in one Person, never to bedivided, who is one Christ, true God and true man,and whotruly suffered, was crucified, dead, and buried,to reconcileus to His Father, and to be a sacrifice for all sins of menboth original and actual. \n### Article 3.Of the going down of Christ into Hades\n\nAs Christ died for us,and was buried,so also it is to bebelieved that He went down into Hades, the abode ofdeparted spirits. \n### Article 4.Of the Resurrection of Christ\n\nChrist truly rose again from death and took again Hisbody, with flesh, bones(St.Luke 24.32),and all thingsbelonging to the perfection of man's nature, with whichHe ascended into heaven, and there sits, until He returnsto judge all men at the last day. \nArticle s:The Eastern churches require ‘proceeding fromthe Father through the Son,'to make sure that there is onlyone source of being(archè)in the Godhead. \nArticle 6:The Book of Daniel was not reckoned by theHebrews among the Prophets, but among the Writings(Kethubim).Lamentations is omitted in the originalArticle;perhaps it is treated as part of Jeremiah, which itis not.The 'First and Second Books of Esdras'are whatwe call Ezra and Nehemiah, and were originally part of theBook of Chronicles. The first sentence
