\nTo Messrs.William Yomg,W.de Blane,L.Baines, and C.MacIntosh,as a token of grati-tude for devoted service as Managers,in therebuilding of tbe Scots Church in Paris \nCHAPT ER ONE \nSombre Dimancbe \nI PREPARED for my morning service at the Scots Kirk in theRue Bayard,Paris, with a heavy heart. The weather wasbeautiful and a slight haze that seemed to promise heat hungover the bridges. It could have been drifting smoke from thebatles that were being fought around the city.Germansoldiers were driving up the valley of the Seine and theWehrmacht, two millions strong and at the height of itspower, was engulfing France. It was June 9th,1940—aSunday.Under a blazing sun,in their oven-like tanks, enemysoldiers, relentless and confident, smashed through villages, reduced homes to rubble and raced towards the Frenchcapital, jubilant in the belief that Paris lay defenceless beforethe might of their Fuehrer. So far,Paris was untouched, except by fear.It was a day when the avenues and boulevardsshould have been alive with gay and chattering Parisians, making the most of the Sabbath break from work. But Parisseemed dismal and dark. The sunshine, gilding the greeneryof the trees in the gardens, mocked a people who knew butcould not admit that defeat was imminent. \nRumour ran like wildfire through the city, false reportsand tales that startled and struck horror. The Fifth Columnwas active and already a great exodus had begun.Carspacked with officials, private citizens, politicians and jour-nalists made their way out of the City.Heavy lorries carriedwhole families and parties of neighbours, together with thepathetic conglomeration of household and personal oddmentsthat human beings clutch in an emergency.A Siamese catblandly grooming its whiskers sat on some luggage piledon a truck.Strapped to the back of a bicycle, ridden by aserious-looking girl,a doll stared unseeingly into space.Anold woman laboured under a heavy, anonymous bundle. \nSlowly in the heat, the endless snake of assorted vehicles \n# THE TARTAN PIMPERNEL\n\nmoved on the jammed roads, all making for the ports, jerkinginto speed for a few moments and then halting,or returningto a sullen crawl \nMany more thousands of people, more than half the pop-ulation,remained at home,clerks,work","cbCaikYjYUNa0xuD","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaikYjYUNa0xuD","pdf",10345790,260,"English","# Contents\n## 1 Sombre
