All passersby were afraid to pick it. They did not know to whom it belonged.  \n\"We had better leave it where it is. The owner will come back to find it where it fell,\" they had said to themselves.  \nEach time he had passed at the spot, on the contrary, Viban had fought back the temptation of touching the bag. He was not like the other passersby who had simply decided to ignore it.  \nHe wanted to discover, and possibly own the bag and all what it contained.  \nOne week, two weeks, a month, then two months had gone by, and the bag still lay there unperturbed. The only new sign was the heavy coat of brown dust that had now settled on it. The dust had made it almost invisible.  \nThis period was the dry season . The harmattan wind blew a lot of dust into all places in the village.  \nIn the evenings, at sunset, most inhabitants of the village went tobathe in the stream before bedtime. On coming from the stream one evening, Viban began asking his friend, Sama, questions about the bag. His friend could not understand this sudden interest of his on a bag that had been there for so long.  \n\"So many frightful stories have been told in the village about this bag. You know them. Why are you again so interested in the bag?\"Sama asked Viban.  \nHe did not expect an answer to his question. He only wanted to discourage his friend from whatever thoughts he had about the bag.  \n\"You do not need to tell anyone your plans . You only have to come here at a special hour, when nobody can see you, and get it,\" Viban quietly told himself.  \nWhen darkness fell in the village, and everyone was near the fireside, to either cook or keep warm, Viban decided to act. He went out of the kitchen as if he wanted to ease himself. He walked on the tips of his toes, afraid to make any noise. When he got to the main road, he quickly looked left, then right, to ensure nobody was around.  \nHaving made sure there was noone nearby, he removed his white shirt. His dark skin, coupled with the dark night, made it difficult for him to be easily seen from far away. He now moved with quick steps, making sure his footsteps did not make any noise.  \nAs he was about to go past the last house along the road, a dog snarled. Then, it barked two or three times. Viban thought someone might come out to check. So, he entered the brush and squatted as if he were defecating.  \nGoing to stool on the ground was a common practice in this village. This way of life, added to the animal dung that was everywhere, brought so many flies to the village.  \nThe village inhabitants did not imagine that flies would settle and carry germs from the excreta.
