important difference is that drama is the mostigurous form of literature.Prose fiction is the loosest of all literaryfoms It is necessary to have knowledge of the stage fo wit:ngof the drama. On the other hand, anyone can witc a novel.(May be that this kind of novel may be third rate). It does notmean that there are no standards of writing a novel.Inspite of itsirregulaity,a good novel must have coherence, compaciness andlogical evolution. Now let us discuss in brief thc importantelements of the novel:- \n4 \n# (1)The novel deals with the events and actions. These eventsand actions constitute 'the plot'of the novel\n\nTHE STUDY OF PROSEFICTION \n(2)These actions and events happen to people/persons.Thesepeisons are 'characters'of the novel. \n(3)The characters talk with one another. This conversationconstitutes 'dialogues.' \n(4)Actions (ake place at a certain place or locale. It can becalled setting. Both time and place of actions are importantin the novel. They serve as a background of the actions. \n1.Discuss the important elements of fiction.Drama evolved long before the novel.Drama and the novel havemany common elements but they have differences too.The rawmaterials in drama and novels are treated in a different manner. \n(5)Then,there is also the element of style. The style of writingdiffers from novelist to novelist. \nThe novel takes its birth in our interest in other human beings. We are all interested ig human passions and feelings. In fact, thisinterest in human actions is the cause of all literary works.Thisis one of the most powerful influences shaping literafure.Thisinterest in human life lias given birth to different forms of literaturelike drama, epic, ballad etc.The latest of these forms is the novel.Drama is not a pure art.It is a compound art.It depends ontheatrical devices, music, stage conditions etc.It is not meant forreading only bu!for stage performance. \n(6)Very often, the novel presents the philosophy of the writer'slife. The novelist shows how his characters deal with certainsituations and problems in their lives.Thus,indirectly.hepresents his own vision of life and attitude towards theworld. We may call this CRITICISM OF LIFE ORPHISOLOPHY OF LIFE. \n \nQ.2.Discuss different kinds of plots and differentmethods of narration. \nThe plo!of the novel is the raw material out of which it is made. When we study the novelists like Dickens,Thackeray.GeorgeEliot and Nathaniel Hawthorne,we find that they drew theirsubjects from widely different aspects of life and classes. In allthese novels,we find different kinds of world in each of them. \nThe iovel on the other hand is an independent art form.Thenovel is often called a pocket theatre'because \n*It has a jplot like the drama. \n*It has characters(actors). \n*It has costumes and setting too. \nOne function of fiction is to amuse the readers. The solecondition of the novel is that it must afford wholesome picture oflife. The greatness of the nsvel depends ypon.the greatness of theplot. But the mere greatness of the plot cannot make a great novel.Mastery of handling is also a characteristic of the great novel.Thetwo great important elements of the novel are individual powerand technical skill. The cardinal principle of any great work of artis fidelity to one's experiences. The quality of 'authenticity'is a \nIt has elements of dramatic representations. \n*it contains dialogues. \nBut the novel is different froin the drama as it enjoys freedomof movement and flexibility which the drama can never enjoy.Thenovel may lose in vividness but achieve in other ways. That is thereason why the novel has become more popular than the drama/Ithas also displaced drama to present human passions and problems. \n☆ \n. \nC. \npre-requisite of the novel of great repute. The novelists shouldwr:e about those things only of which he is the most familiarWhat he is not familiar with,he should leave alone.Jane Austenstrictly adhered to her own experiences of life. \n# (2)The First Person Account or Autobiogra","cbCaiausdiXPHLM6","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiausdiXPHLM6","pdf",12524121,23,"English","# The Novel: Important Elements\n## Plot, Characters,
