secondary(progressive)school, wasformerly a trustee of a primary school anda trustee of one of the great Eastern uni-versities,and am now a trustee of Vassar. \nAn address delivered by \nThe content of the following addressby President Henry Noble MacCrackenof Vassar College has interested me somuch that I have had it reprinted andsent to a group who may be encour-aged and stimulated to think about oureducational questions in America. \nHENRY NOBLE MACCRACKEN \nPRESIDENT OF VASSAR COLLEGE \nAt the Opening Session of the Conference ofTHE NATIONAL STUDENT FEDERATIONOF AMERICA \nIf it touches the mind and heart of butone here and there and if it quickens hisinterest in only the general philosophyof our educational processes,I shall feelfully repaid for the effort made to spreadthe gospel of the open mind in education. \nHELD AT THEUNIVERSITY OF MICHIGANON DECEMBER 2,1926 \nAUb2b c~-~c① \nThe American college has always beenan experiment. It is more an experimenttoday than ever before, because for thefirst time the experiment begins to beconducted upon scientific methods.Allover the country new colleges are beingplanned and old colleges reorganized. The process by which they come intobeing is scientific. An inquiry is begun,a survey is made, expert investigatorsare appointed, reports are published andsubject to review, funds are collectedupon the basis of these findings, and thecollege is started upon a declared basisof action the terms of which are subjectto the strictest scrutiny and the condi-tions of which are under the control ofcompetent observers. The results ofthese experiments should, within a fewyears,be available to the educationalworld and several questions to whichthere is today no adequate reply shouldbe answered. \nUp in New England on the hills of \nOld Bennington,a woman's college witha new correlation of knowledge is shortlyto be established. At Swarthmore Col-lege in Pennsylvania an English honorsschool is in full operation.Down inNorth Carolina,on the rolling Piedmontsoil of Durham,Duke University isrising, endowed with eighty millions. Here in the Middle West Antioch Collegehas been reborn upon a plan startlinglyoriginal and appealing in many ways. The University of Wisconsin gives theopportunity to test out the faith of Pro-fessor Meiklejohn in the possibility ofcultural education upon a new plan.Afurther experiment not yet begun is theplan of a college without trustees orpresident and administered on liberaland democratic terms.Tentative effortshave already been made in the MiddleWest for its founding. In the Westthe new Claremont Colleges in California, with their program recently announced, stand as important examples of what isgoing on.Unnamed new colleges arebeing cut out of whole cloth;and theold educational world is watching in \norder to see whether the pattern will tellus anything. For we are all ","cbCaituxmkv2q3WB","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaituxmkv2q3WB","pdf",799925,"English","# Foreword\n# The
