The pirate Tom sails, searches for treasure, endures storms, and finally discovers treasure revealed by the weather’s impact on his surroundings. The document provides a cold task and phased writing approach (imitation, innovation, independent application), plus a boxing-up pattern introducing the main character, escalating trouble, and rewarding discovery. It also supplies vocabulary, hooks, drama and arts ideas, and short-burst sentence work to develop mood and descriptive language through sensory, time, weather, and preposition-based setting details.","Extract from Inspiring Creative Writers
For more unit overviews and planning the full text is available here:
[https://shop.talk4writing.com/products/](https://shop.talk4writing.com/products/)[ ](https://shop.talk4writing.com/products/)[inspiring-creative-writers](inspiring-creative-writers)
THE STORY OF PIRATE TOM
Long, long ago, there was a pirate called Tom. Tom sailed the seven seas on his pirate ship ‘The Jolly Roger’.
Unfortunately, it was not very jolly because they had no treasure. The pirates were glum. Tom did not know how to cheer them up.
First, they sailed from island to island. Next, they went searching for treasure. Finally, they dug down deep but all that they found was a dry, old fishbone and a smelly boot! That made the pirates sadder. They cried, and they cried, and they cried. So, off they sailed.
In the distance, the clouds were growing larger and larger.
In the distance, the rain was pouring harder and harder.
In the distance, a storm was coming closer and closer.
The pirates sailed the Jolly Roger to the island of Rockabilly. All night long, the storm thrashed against their boat, the waves crashed onto the island and the rain lashed the rocks.
The next morning, it was sunny, so Pirate Tom decided to go for a swim. Deep down in the water, he saw something glittering, something glistening, something gleaming. It was a box of treasure that the storm had uncovered.“Yo, ho, ho, me hearties. I’ve found treasure,” called Tom.
All day, the pirates swam down and up, down and up, down and up. In the end, they had a huge pile of treasure and huge grins on their faces.
Pie Corbett

| TALK FOR WRITING UNIT OVERVIEW | | | |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Model text:
The Story of Pirate Tom | Story type:
Journey (Finding) | | Toolkit focus:
Setting |
| Cold task: Write about a pirate exploring an unfamiliar setting, such as a desert island.
