Awakened by her sister Rue’s fever and depleted water supplies, Zae plans a risky bargain: she needs coin and supplies by bleeding a forge-boss for payment. With a sack of scavenged Aether-cores and dangerous inherited debt looming, she pushes into the salvage yards, only to face Kregg’s brutal scrutiny and predatory demands.","The Storm-Bringer's Vow Spark of the Wyvern Book 1 \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nCopyright \nCopyright © 2026 by Jareth Corvus All rights reserved. \nNo part of this tale may be shared, reproduced, or transmitted—whether by spell, scroll, machine, or modern device—without written approval from the author. She was awake before her eyes even opened. The Dross didn't allow for deep sleep. Down here, in the sunless underbelly of Orovind, sleep was just a brief pause between surviving and dying. \nZae pushed herself up from the thin, mildew-stained mattress. The crushing weight of the world pressed down. At one-point-two times standard gravity, simply standing up in the lower levels required effort, a physical reminder of their place at the absolute bottom of the food chain. She swung her legs over the edge of the cot, her steel-toed boots hitting the rusted iron floorboards with a dull thud. \nIn the corner, huddled beneath a pile of soot-stained canvas, her ten-yearold sister coughed again. Rue’s small frame shook violently. \n\"I've got you, little bird,\" Zae murmured, her voice a raspy whisper swallowed by the ever-present, mechanical drone of the city above. She reached for the tin canteen on the overturned crate they used as a table. She tipped it. Bone dry. Not a single drop of clean water left. The runoff from the upper levels was toxic, laced with heavy metals and runoff from the highborns' pristine Aether-engines. Drinking from the slum-pipes was a death sentence disguised as a reprieve. \nZae set her jaw. She needed water, which meant she needed to bleed a forge-boss for coin. \nShe stripped off her sleeping tunic, the freezing air biting at her olive skin, and began to gear up. Survival in the Bait Pits and the scrap-yards required maximum mobility and a distinct lack of hesitation. She strapped on her crimson leather underbust corset, pulling the laces tight over a shredded black crop-top. The frayed fabric clung desperately to her heavily curvaceous figure, her exceptionally large bust straining against the constraints of the scavenged material. It left her toned, silver-scarred midriff \ncompletely exposed to the chill. She didn't care. Down here, you used what you had. If the scavengers were staring at her chest, they weren't looking atthe rusted blade tucked into the waistband of her tight, distressed leather trousers. \nShe swept her thick, midnight-black curls to the left, running a calloused hand over the rough undercut shaved into the right side of her skull. A sharp, metallic hum vibrated in her ears. \nZae grabbed her canvas sack, filled with the three depleted Aether-cores she’d spent fourteen hours digging out of a collapsed drainage pipe the day before. It wasn't much. But it had to be enough. She kissed Rue’s feverish forehead, pulled the heavy iron door shut behind her, and stepped into the nightmare. \nThe smell of sulfur and burnt ozone hit her like a physical blow. \nThe Dross was a labyrinth of rusted scaffolding, hissing steam-vents, and neon-lit misery. Smog hung in the air like a thick, yellow bruised curtain.
