tendencyto discourage the efforts of women to take an active part in eco-nomic life.Christian writers seem generally to have held thatwomen's activities should be almost exclusively confined to therearing of children and to domestic employments, and while therewere a few other occupations which were not considered at all ir-regular or abnormal for women, still others, which pagans did notdiscountenance, were considered entirely disreputable, and womenwere also excluded both by public opinion and by law from per-forming any of the so-called“masculine”employments.Ecclesi-astical writers seem not to have objected to a higher education forwomen, but rather to have favored improving her opportunities inthis direction, provided at least that this education concerned itselfwith distinctively Christian learning, for, with Christian women, theological scholarship was the Christian equivalent of the studyof philosophy by pagan women.Augustine highly commended thedesirability of an educated wife, and Jerome frequently praised thescholarship of his lady friends, several of whom might well becalled learned women. \nEcclesiastical writers seem to have been highly suspicious ofthe marked movement in favor of the extension of woman's legalrights, for the more strict and zealous, like Tertullian, apparentlyfeared lest,if she were granted a high degree of legal freedom, shemight be carried beyond the limits of her conventional róle andbecome entirely demoralized.Tertullian at least would have wel-comed the return of the Oppian Law and of the days when thehusband had the power of life and death over his wife, and evenAugustine, who was one of the most liberally minded of the Fath-ers,did not approve of a woman's having absolute control of herproperty. \nChristian writers also seem generally not to have approvedof a very great degree of social liberty for women, any more thanof an extreme extension of her legal rights, for they felt that Ro-man society was so corrupt that modesty was endangered every \ntime a woman appeared in publie. It was precarious even to visitthe martyrs'shrines or to go to church, and consequently
