The speaker sets a point of departure by asking what minimum coercion the State has instituted, then frames the implications for moral, philosophical, religious, and social thinking. \nPAUL RICEUR \n用 \nTHE THIRD JOHN KNOX HOUSE LECTUREJUNE I2,I957 \nPUBLISHED BY THE JOHN Knox HoUSB \n14,AVENUE CALAS,GENEVA,SwITZERLAND \nTHE ANNUAL JOHN KNOX HOUSE LECTURE \nFollowing our first two lectures given in English,we are very pleased tohave as our third speaker a person whose language is French. We often sayhere that\"the official language of the House is French\"but often,as in theecumenical world,English predominates. The John Knox House is a partof the fraternal work of the ecumenical mission of the Presbyterian Church,U.S.A.,in liaison with the National Protestant Church of Geneva. \nAfter the General Secretary of the World Council of Churches,Dr.W.A.Visser't Hooft, and Dr.D.T.Niles,of Ceylon,Secretary of the Departmentof Evangelism,we now have the honor of presenting a non-theologian,though no one will miss the theological significance of his words.M.PaulRiccur,Professor of Philosophy at the Sorbonne,is a brilliant representativeof French protestant thought. \nIf at the time of the inauguration of the John Knox House and of thefirst lecture,we announced the series as treating “ecumenical and missionarytasks”,it may seem that the present subject is somewhat of a departure.Onthe contrary,we believe the subject to be of vital relevance, for the eventswhich have occurred since the summer of 1956 have certainly pushed Chris-tians and churches into deliberations about the problem of the State. \nOur first two lecturers already enjoyed a world-wide reputation in ecu-menical circles;Paul Ricceur is very well known in the French world and inEurope. We hope to contribute to the broadening influence of FrenchProtestantism in issuing this publication. As in the case of the other lectures,it will be translated into English and into German and approximately8000 copies will be distributed free of charge, particularly among the youngchurches of Asia,Africa and Latin America. \nA few French,German and English copies of the preceding lectures:\"Our Ecumenical Task in the Light of History”by W.A.Visser ’t Hooft, and“The Context of our Preaching”by D.T.Niles,are at the disposal ofthose who would like to order them. They may address their request to \nThe DirectorJobn Knox House. \nI4,avenue CalasGeneva,Switzerland \n3 \n# THE LECTURER FOR 1957\n\nPaul Ricceur was born in I9I3.A“docteur ès lettres”,he first taught irschools at St.Brieux and Colmar. He joined the French army in I939 anwas taken prisoner in I940.After the war,he taught at the College Cevenobefore becoming a research assistant at the National Center of ScientifiResearch. He held the chair of History and Philosophy at the University oStrasbourg from I949 until I956,when he left to become Professor of Metaphysics at the Sorbonne. After October I,I957 he will also be Professor oPhilosophy at the Free Protestant Faculty of Theology in Paris. In additionhe gave a three months'course at the Theology Faculty of McGill UniversityMontreal in Canada, last year. \nProfessor Riccæur is a member of the executive committee of the \"Esprit'Movement and President of the Protestant Teaching Federation. In hithought and life,Paul Riccur has two dominating interests, philosophical orthe one hand, political and moral on the other. As a philosopher,he seekto use the methods of phenomenology and existentialism to constructmetaphysic and to stimulate dialogue and a confrontation between metaphysics and theology. His wide culture, his concern for man,his interest ithe development of society(especially concerning the growing importance othe common man in history),his generosity and lucidity make him one of thmost significant contemporary French philosophers.By nature independenthe belongs to no political party, but through his thinking and involvemenin public life,he is one of the leaders of the younger generation.Firmlrooted in the","cbCaioOjUSyIiegf","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaioOjUSyIiegf","pdf",1930434,24,"English","# THE LECTURER FOR 1957\n##
