Guided by the song’s lyrics and the shared harmony, she steps from private grief into public connection, risking embarrassment and doubt. The chapter opens with a romantic, music-driven encounter that sparks a sudden, unfamiliar sense of intimacy and belonging, interrupted only by applause as their duet continues.","THE SOULMATE \nRONA HALSALL \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nFor all the widows, missing their other half. The sound of live music caught her attention, drawing her to a small crowd. They were gathered around a piano at the side of the Plaza, watching a man play and she stopped to listen. He was probably a few years older than her. His face was a bit too long, his mouth a little on the wide side, his nose larger than might be classed as attractive. But put all that together with his floppy blonde fringe and the whole effect was quite beautiful. The way he played was bewitching, his fingers caressing the keys, putting so much care and meaning into each note. His dress code reminded her of Ed Sheeran – in his well-worn jeansand hoodie, but in a way that said he didn’t really care about clothes or hairstyles, he was all about the music. \nHe sang as he played, his eyes closing as he reached the high notes of the Coldplay anthem, ‘Fix You’. When it got to the line about tears streaming, her eyes stung, making her blink, a flush of emotion filling her chest. It never ceased to amaze her how music had the power to release emotions you didn’t realise were close to the surface. But she recognised this sadness within, recognised that she, herself, and her life come to that, could do with a bit of fixing. God knows, she’d never taken the easy road. \nShe edged closer, humming along, and then she found herself singing, unable to resist joining in. He looked up, surprised, and caught her eye. Oh my word, she thought, how can anyone have eyes that colour? They were the blue of a summer sky, giving his appearance a whole new dimension. \nWhen his face split into a grin, his eyes sparkled and she grinned back, captivated, her heart racing like a horse galloping along a beach, tasting freedom and not wanting to stop. \nHe had long, elegant fingers, she noticed. And as he played the introduction to his next song, he gave her a questioning look, silently asking if she knew it. She smiled and stepped closer, her hand on top of the piano now. Of course she knew it. This was her favourite song, the soundtrack to her life.‘Fly Away’by Lenny Kravitz. \n‘You have a lovely tone,’ he said. ‘I heard you harmonising on that last song. You want to join me on this one?’ His voice was smooth and gentle, mellow as a fine wine. ‘You take the lead, if you like, and I’ll do the harmonies this time.’ \nTake the lead? Could she, did she have the nerve? It was a while since she’d sung in public and she glanced around, wondering if anyone would be filming, because that would mean her answer would be no. But there were only a few people watching now and no phones to be seen.
