\nSORROWFULCITY \nHARRY MORRIS \nTHE SORROWFUL CITY \nbyHARRY MORRIS \nTHESE PoEMS BY HARRY MoRRIS are the first hehas collected in a volume.Essentially they areconcerned with the conflict between good andevil inside the individual as he progresses physi-cally and mentally from youth to maturity, andfrom maturity to the end of this mortality.Themovement involves much regression, and thejourney is often only one of the mind;but clearlythis poet has travelled to several regions of ourcountry, finding lessons in the land, the people, and the traditions that modify what he hadknown before. \nMr.Morris is a formalist, none of his poemsforsaking the traditional English modes as theywere before Walt Whitman. He employs a widerange of verse forms, often hazarding the mostrigid;but we never feel the metrics, the stanzaor rhyme schemes poking through. As in allgood art,the skeleton of his work is covered wellwith flesh. The reader who does not want to beaware of any part of a poem other than its soundand meaning will not have to worry about thisverse. \nThe very best of these pieces are those set inthe countryside.Mr.Morris'observations ofbirds, animals, fowers, and trees identify himwith the nature poets and offer us a wide rangeof natural beauty.Much that he observes doesnot come to us regularly from the earlier pastoralpoets;and perhaps he differs from the traditionbecause of his origins in the city. Those whoare not much moved by pasture, field, river, andhill will find him walking familiarly on the pave-ment. \nPerhaps the best commentary on The Sorrow-ful City is that by ALLEN TATE: \nHarry Morris'poems have long deserved pub-lication in a book.He is a learned poet;buthis erudition, far from frustrating him, sustainsa subtle originality. These poems grow andreverberate in the reader's mind. \n# NMVNOHLIM\n\nC \n又 \nDigitized by the Internet Archivein 2021 with funding fromKahle/Austin Foundation \nTHE \nSORROWFULCITY \nHarry Morris NOTES\n\nThe poems in this volume were written from 1952 to 1963.They are not arranged in order of composition, but ingroupings that illustrate my major interests over thetwelve-year span. Were they presented chronologically,I believe that the earliest would refect a concern for manand the city, for man in relation to steel and concretestructures;but the city, the stone, the metal exist insidethe inhabitants as well as around them. \nPoems from the middle of the dozen years show whatI beliece was in me an awakening to nature, coincidingwith my removal from the large cities that were myresidence for the first twenty-odd years of my life. \nNature then seemed neither good nor evil;I saw within itsomething akin to the medieval “doctrine of signatures,”in which man found on every natural object the mark ofits uses, its virtues, its malignancies. In my mind thethings of nature were signed with more
