Sisterhood in the Spirit of the Council\n\nMOST REV.CHARLES A.BUSWELL \nSeveral years ago,I attended the Centenary Celebration of the Benedic-tine Sisters in Atchison,Kansas. On that occasion, the late CardinalRitter was present. He spoke in glowing terms of the great contribu-tion the Sisters had made and continue to make to the Church andto the world. His Eminence spoke of the dedication of the Sisters. He spoke also of their apostolate,of their work in religious education,in hospitals,in orphanages and in homes of charity. In all of theseareas,His Eminence aid,the Sisters had performed a service whichwas incomparable in the annals of the entire history of the Church. \nThe Cardinal spoke very shortly before the beginning of theSecond Vatican Council. This Council has brought a new fermentinto the Church.Following the spirit of Pope John as indicated inhis opening address to the Council, the Fathers of the Council firsttook a look at the Church itself.Pope John had said that the ageshad brought their share of imperfections to the Church.Whateveris of Christ in the Church is perfect. But the membership of theChurch is also made of imperfect individuals, each one of whombrings his share of imperfection to the Body of Christ which is theChurch \nThe Fathers of the Council, therefore, used a word(which hadfor centuries been considered to be a bad word)to describe whatwas imperative for the Church in our day. That term is“reformation”.Vatican II took as one of its principles Ecclesia semper reformanda, the Church is ever in need of reformation. With this principle inmind, the Council in a positive sense took a very critical view of theChurch and of all the institutions within it.This public examinationof conscience has necessarily brought tension even as it brings aboutthe needed reform. \nCardinal Suenens, one of the leading figures of Vatican II,hadsaid that we must not only look at ourselves, but also look at theposition of the Church face to face with the world. The Church, hesaid,is not designed by Christ to be a ghetto. He designed it to \npenetrate the entire world and to breathe his spirit into every humaninstitution. \nOne of the big questions of the Council was whether or notthe Church should be involved with the world. The answer wasclear:even as Christ came into the world to bring light and ife tothe world,so the Church,Christ living in the world today, mustpenetrate every segment of society with His loving-giving influence. \n# OPENNESS\n\nThe
