Literally, especially after this unnaturally long, hot summer, in the burnished palette of meadows and gardens. But also as golden gifts of the last slow sunrises and sunsets, and that mellow, lingering feel before the season turns. \nThere are harvest treasures, too; hedgerows of juicy blackberries and elderberries, apples ripe for the picking, bright rosehips and rowan \nberries. These precious things, once bottled and jam-jarred on pantry shelves, bring back a taste of the golden hours of summer whenever we feel the need. \nIf you get that new school year urge to embark on a project, take it outdoors while the warmer weather lasts; sketching with a picnic, a tick-as-you go exploring challenge or photographing wildlife. And remember to make a note of everyday enchantments, too – much like that bramble jam on your toast in midwinter, these recollections will see you through any less golden times to come . \nLisa EDITOR LISA SYKES \nFORAGING \nJuicy and plump, blackberries and elderberries are ripe for the picking – and the eating – right about now \nBerry nice \nHEDGEROWS ARE BURSTING WITH FRUITS, SO \nENJOY A LITTLE BLACKBERRY AND ELDERBERRY \nPICKING, THEN MAKE SWEET AND SAVOURY \nDISHES FOR NOW AND FOR LATER \nRecipes, styling & photography: ANNA RUBINGH \nRoasted beetroot, apple and blackberry salad \nEarthy roast beetroot, sweet apple, juicy blackberries and aged cheese make for a salad that brings together the very best of the season. \nServes 4 \n4 raw beetroot, scrubbed clean Small handful of hazelnuts \n1 apple (such as Jonagold) Lemon juice \n100g blackberries, washed 1-2 tbsp olive oil (plus extra for roasting the beetroot) \n1 tbsp apple cider vinegar 50g pecorino \n1 tbsp runny honey \n1 Preheat the oven to 200C/ Fan 180C/Gas 6. \n2 Cut the beetroot in half. Allow to cool slightly, then rub off the skins. Roughly chop some of the nuts and leave the rest whole. \n4 Once the beetroots are soft, remove them from the oven, allow to cool slightly, peel off the skins, and cut into wedges about 1cm thick. \n5 Peel the apple, quarter it, remove the core, and slice into wedges.
