I live in a town not far from the Aral Sea. It was once the fourth largest inland sea in the world. Two rivers flowed into it bringing fresh water from the mountains.  \nMy father said that it had fresh sparkling blue waters. There were islands in the sea and fishing villages grew up on the shores of the islands and the sea itself. Its waters teemed with fish and and this provided jobs for 60,000 people living around the sea.  \nThere were the fishermen who went out to fish in their boats. There were the buyers who came to buy the fish to sell in the towns far and near.  \nThere were the salespeople who worked in the fish shops in these towns. Then there were the workers who worked in the fish canneries which exported the fish.  \nThen the government did something. This changed the whole pattern of life for thousands of people who lived on the shores of the sea. The government decided to divert the waters from the rivers to irrigate the cotton fields in Central Asia.  \nThis irrigation scheme was very successful for the cotton farmers; but for the fishermen in the Aral Sea, it was the beginning of the end of their livelihood although they did not know it at first.  \nThey watched with dismay as the fish slowly decreased. They were concerned at the shrinking of the sea.
