have. His short stories, however, have never been seriously studied, except as anadjunct to his larger fictional canon.Generally,he has beenconsidered a short-story writer manqué,a novelist writing inan unfamiliar genre.Yet some of Hardy's first attempts infiction were short stories, and his productivity n the formincreased as he felt more free to write what he pleased-afterhe had established himself, professionally and financially,as anovelist. Many of the best stories are products of his maturityand the careful organization of the short-story volumesespecially demonstrates Hardy's own awareness of the themesand techniques that draw together his otherwise differentnarratives. The collections are themselves single fictionalworks. The aim of this study is to examine Hardy's shortfiction in close detail in an attempt to understand his develop-ing conception of the short story as a literary form.In manyinstances, the novels and poems are invoked in order toilluminate an aspect of a story or collection, but my chiefconcern is to study the short stories in isolation,as works ofliterature distinct from, though not utterly unlike,Hardy'sother achievements in prose and verse. My focus is primarilyon the narratives collected in Wessex Tales,A Group of NobleDames, and Life's Little Ironies-not only because these are theworks which Hardy freely chose to reprint, but also becausethey are artistic wholes in their own right and exemplify threedistinct kinds of story in his fictional canon.BecauseA ChangedMan was never considered by Hardy as a coherent fictionalunit,my treatment of the stories in that volumeis confined to aretrospective survey in the concluding chapter of all Hardy'sshort stories, collected and uncollected. This is not in itself ajudgment on the quality of A Changed Man-though Hardy","cbCaiuO8IhAoAtXh","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiuO8IhAoAtXh","pdf",64593024,247,"English","# Preface\n## Contents\n## Textual Note\n## Notes\n## A Selected Bibliography\n##
