He was married to a woman he adored and, as medical superintendent of the local lunatic asylum, was well respected in the community. Psychological medicine may not be the most distinguished branch of his profession, but the pioneering work being conducted at the hospital under his leadership would ultimately make dramatic improvements to the treatment of those suffering from maladies of the mind. And it was surprising who needed the services of institutions that cared for the mentally ill. Lunacy was certainly not a respecter of class or social standing. Everyone, it seemed, had a madwoman in the attic.  \nIt had been a long day and he still had to undertake the three-mile journey home. Sometimes the doctor stayed overnight in his former quarters, especially if the weather was bad. Occasionally he took a horse from the stables. But generally, he enjoyed the walk across the windswept but silent moor at the end of the day. It was a chance to clear his head and order his thoughts.  \nHe was already leaving later than planned because a disturbed individual in Meadow Ward had attacked a fellow patient, and now he had a ridiculous anonymous note to deal with. The instructions were clear; he was  \nto come alone to the chapel and wait in the vestry. It warned he’d be extremely foolish to ignore the request…  \nA small lantern lit his way, as he trudged across the asylum gardens to the little granite chapel in the grounds. He waited in the gloom of the small side room, curious to see an oilskin had been laid across the floor, but not giving it too much thought. Some nonsense of Drefan’s most likely. A horse whinnied from outside, suggesting he now had company.  \nThe south door creaked open, followed by the sound of feet clicking across the stone floor of the nave. This matter, whatever it concerned, needed sorting quickly as a storm was imminent and he wanted to be on his way as soon as possible. The mackerel sky of yesterday had been a warning and the air had hung heavy all day.  \nFinally, the low wooden door of the vestry swung open. He turned to see a man approaching in the flickering light, wearing a wide-brimmed hat that obscured his eyes, and with a bushy beard concealing his remaining features. Dr Hawkins was late to notice there was something in his right hand – one of the heavy wooden candlesticks from the altar – and he realised he’d been foolish to come. Who even was this stranger?
