Irving AdlerAuthor of \nMAGIC HOUSE OF NUMBERS,THE NEW MATHEMATICS,THINKING MACHINES,ETC. \nWhen the Adler Book of Puzzles and Riddles was pub-lished in 1962,the title page named Irving and Peggy Adleras the authors. It also gave a share of credit to Sam Loyd, probably the greatest inventor of puzzles and riddles whoever lived, whose puzzle Cyclopedia had inspired us.Sucha collaboration of two authors on one book, not to mentiona third silent partner, always raises a question in the reader'smind:How much of the book is the work of each author? In this case, the answer is easy. \nFirst Peggy and I decided on the types of puzzles thatshould be included, and how they should be arranged inthe book.We agreed that any puzzle selected from the old \n1963 by Peggy Adler Walsh \nAll rights neserved. This book,or parts thereof, must not be repro-duced in any form without permission.Published by The John DayCompany,Inc.,62 West 45th Street,New York 36,N.Y.,and simul-taneously in Canada by Longmans Canada Limited,Toronto. \nLibrary of Congress Catalogue Card Number:63-15912 \nMANUFACTURED IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA \n0080-0110 \nSam Loyd Cyclopedia had to be rewritten, and the pictureshad to be redrawn. We also agreed that many of the puzzlesought to be brand new. \nThen Peggy did the job of selecting and rewriting theSam Loyd puzzles that were used. She made up all of thenew puzzles and drew all of the illustrations. \nWhen the time came to prepare a Second Adler Book ofPuzzles and Riddles it was clear that Irving Adler was nolonger needed even for preliminary discussion. That is whythis book is written and illustrated by Peggy alone.Sheasked me only if I would write a preface to explain thisbackground, which I have been proud to do. \nIt remains to say that only a small fraction of the puzzlesin this book are adapted from old Sam Loyd puzzles. All ofthe hidden geography puzzles, the rebuses, the picturearithmetic puzzles, and the word evolution puzzles are new, original puzzles by Peggy Adler. \nMatthew and Samuel are two little mice who live in abarn.Mathew lives in a mousehole in the east wall of thebarn. He is awakened early each morning when the sunrises.Samuel lives in a mousehole in the west wall of thebarn. The sun does not awaken Samuel in the morning, because it always rises in the east.So every morningMatthew taps his tail at Samuel's mousehole to wake himup. Then the two mice go off together to look for somecheese for their breakfast. \nOne morning,at sunrise,a dewdrop slipped through acrack in the roof on the western side of the barn, rolleddown Samuel's back, and woke him up.He decided tocross the floor of the barn to visit Matthew, and to watchthe sun climb in the eastern sky.At a point 25 feet fromthe western wall of the barn Samuel passed Matthew, who was already on his way to wake him up.But bothmice were still very sleepy, and Samuel did not see Mat-thew,and Matthew did not see Samuel. When Samuelreached Matthew's mousehole,he peeked inside, andsaw that Matthew was not at home.So he turned aroundand started to go back to his own hole on the oppositeside of the barn.At a point 35 feet from the eastern wallof the barn,Samuel met Matthew again.Matthew hadreached Samuel's mousehole, and because Samuel hadnot answered wh","cbCaisVV3IYPbLk2","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaisVV3IYPbLk2","pdf",3356531,56,"English","#
