\nTurn to Section 1 of your answer sheet to answer the questions in this section. \nDIRECTIONS \nQuestions 1-10 are based on the following passage. \nThis passage is adapted from Anita Desai,\"The Artist's Life◎2000 by Anita Desai. \nOf course Polly had been introduced to Art as aninfant.Of course the local school providedher—indiscriminately,as it did all children—withpaint and clay and crayons, and she had made,as allLine children make, representations of her home and5 family—triangular—shaped father and motherholding hands, box—shaped brother in outsized shortsstanding apart—as well as of daisies in a vase, andeven a lopsided teacup or two, each of them intenselysatisfying for a day or two, then desperately10 unsatisfying thereafter. \nBut what Miss Abigail at the camp introduced herto was Real Art:in her whispery, bubbly, disquietingvoice she had urged them to 'paint your dreams—showme what you dreamed last night'.She had spaced the15 words, leaving great gaps for them to fill, and thensighed a replete sigh,as one might when overcomeby swirls of incense, when Polly presented aparticularly lurid or mysterious painting—headless, shrouded figures in shades of purple appearing on20 the surface of a lake with large,many-pointed starsshining down on them out of a streaky sky,or purplepigeons swooping down out of a pink sky to lightupon lilac roofs(Polly was very attached to thecolour purple, and perhaps it was only a coincidence25 but that was the colour that dominated Miss Abigail'stie-dyed shifts too). For the sake of that narrowing ofgreen cat's eyes, that slow exhalation of breath that \nEach passage or pair of passages below is followed by a number of questions. After readingeach passage or pair, choose the best answer to each question based on what is stated orimplied in the passage or passages and in any accompanying graphics(such as a table orgraph). \nspoke such volumes, and simply for the sake of30 staying close to that enchantingly incense-scentedyoung woman with her flowing red hair and flowingpurple dresses,Polly dedicated the summer to paint, letting others canoe, shoot arrows, roastmarshmallows or run around working up a sweat.35 She came home reluctantly, dazed into anuncharacteristic silence, with her paintings rolled upinto an impressively long roll—Miss Abigail hadinsisted she always use large sheets of thick paper forher art.The family had been faintly surprised by40 what she spread out on the dining table for them;they turned to her with quizzical looks and remarkslike ‘Very nice, dear,'and ‘Now what is thatsupposed to be?'making her roll them up again inoffended exasperation, and carry them up to the attic45 where she spread them out along with all herpainting equipment. She was determined to findherself a tie-dyed skirt, wear her hair loose, not intight painful pigtails any more, and spend the rest ofthe summer drawing long strokes of purple and lilac50 paint across sheets of paper, humming themelancholy tunes Miss Abigail had hummed at thecamp. \nUnfortunately it was very, very hot under the atticroof, and in that thrumming heat of late August she55 would find her head spinning after a while. So muchso that she was compelled to stretch out on a sheet ofcanvas and fall into a kind of stupor, struggling tokeep her eyes open.Spiders descended from therafters and spun their wavering webs,or dangled like60 aerial acrobats over her head.Seeing one unroll itslifeline and drop, cautiously and investigatively, \ncloser and closer to the nest of her hair, she swattedat it,and upset a mug of water over a painting of avolcano spewing blood-red and orange paint.65 The water and paint seeped through several layers ofpaper, staining not only one but several otherpaintings as well.
