DO NOTRE.VE \nathoilife \n..1-3 \nThe Sacrament of Baptism,some-times referred to as the “mystery ofthe living water,\"may well be calleda“chance for eternity,”that is aneternity of happy reward. It is thisbecause it initiates the recipient intoGod's chosen community of faithful, the Church. It is a“chance”becauseit in no way promises that the soulwill attain such a reward. But it isnone the less clear from Christ's ownwords in Scripture that you don'tstand a chance without it,in one orother of its forms. We are here pri-marily concerned with the formalSacrament of Baptism. \nThe Church is at its symbolic bestin the ritual of administration, aform given essentially by ChristHimself. The pouring of water overthe head of the neophyte is really amodern development of the originalpractice of the person entering com-pletely into a body of water to betotally immersed.Christ was bap-tized thus in the river Jordan.Andthe members of the early Churchfollowed the same procedure. \nThe symbolism of the water ismany-fold,and is revealed moreclearly by immersion than aspersion.Often we regard the meaning to beone of“washing away”the stain oforiginal sin.It is more than that. The Water also symbolizes the jour-ney of life we are beginning, whichcan be likened to a long voyage. \nThere is another strong symbolismin water:it is both death-giving andlife-giving.It is essential for phy-sical life, and yet in many forms canmost decisively destroy life. And Godhas used it so. \nConsider the Exodus of the Jewsfrom Egypt where they were in slav-ery,to the freedom of the PromisedLand.Arriving at the shore of theRed Sea,with the Pharoah's armyin pursuit, the waters parted,per-mitting the Jews to walk safely tothe opposite shore. However, when \n2 \nthe enemy followed through the sea,the waters rolled over them,destroy-ing them. \nAnd so with Baptism, the friendlywater does not harm the one beingbaptized, but destroys the power ofthe devil over the soul by removingthe mark of original sin and bygrace marking the soul as the pos-session of God. \nSometimes,when reading throughthe ritual of Baptism, people remarkwith surprise on the many exorcismsuttered by the priest to_drive outSatan and his“pomps.”\"Does this,\"they ask,\"imply that Satan actually \npossesses the soul of an innocent in-fant?” \nIn a sense, yes. It does mean toimply that Satan is the personal au-thor of evil,an evil the unbaptizedperson is born with great predisposi-tion toward. It does mean to implythat Satan has every desire, purposeand intent to win the soul for him-self.It does imply that the infant isborn with the mark of original sinand without the mark of God's King-dom.In this sense the answer is yes. \nThere is an objection by many out-side the Church and the questioningof some within as to the practice ofinfant Baptism. The objection is thatthe child, being without reason, isunwittingly initiated into the Church. This having been done, there is noassurance that the infant on matur-ing will remain a sincere member ofthe Church and fullfil the promisesmade in his or her name duringBaptism. \nWhile there is no assurance,to betrue, there are several very strongreasons recommending the practice.First, and perhaps most important,we must guard against negating thepower of God's grace, and subjectingit to human limitations.Second, thereis a direct obligation upon the par-ents and godparents that the condi-tions be created and guarded to per-mit the growing child to learn andlive the Church's doctrine. And herea reprimand, too, for those who re-gard Baptism as a custom, ratherthan a Sacrament.Third,it wouldseem unjust to deny a child the rightto heaven, which Baptism gives, bywithholding the administration ofthe Sacrament. \nBaptism also gives the recipientgifts of infused grace and moral vir-tue,which,upon his reaching the ageof reason, give him not only thestrength to remain faithful to thevows made in his name, but the mo-ral obligation as well. \nJUNE 1955 \nWe must remember, too, that it isBaptism which permits the ","cbCaicJk1LfYbLXK","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaicJk1LfYbLXK","pdf",1823454,"English","# The Sacrament of Baptism - A
