The review argues that the book offers a clear, intelligible account of the 1917 revolution and its origins, addressing a generation’s confusion around major figures. It emphasizes Moorehead’s use of extensive, previously secret German Foreign Office records and highlights how these sources shape interpretations of corruption, conspiracy, and financing connected to lighted;but to most of us it iscuriously obscure. The Russian Revolution hangs suspended in a kind oflimbo. On the one hand,it has not yet receded far enough into the past to assumethe(often deceptively)clear outlines of such events as our Civil War.On the otherhand,it is not near enough to us in time to affect us with the reality of somethingexperienced. There is a whole generation of grown-up Americans to whom thenames Nicholas II,Rasputin,Lenin,Trotsky,Kerensky,Kornilov are in varyingdegrees familiar, but who might be stumped if required to associate these namesclearly and in some detail with the Russian Revolution.A kind of haze seems tosurround the event, hardly dissipated by the fact that the most brilliant treatmentsof the subject, such as Trotsky's,are apt to be violently partisan to the point ofmalicious distortion. \nI \nAnd yet every passing day forces upon us the grave necessity of a clear compre-hension of the Soviet Union.Few of us can spare the time,or have the interest, \nOn the front cover:A Bolshevik Commissar urges troops of an armored-car regiment tosupport the revolution,Petrograd,1917.Painting by Carroll Jones.Courtesy Life magazine. \nneeded to present state of the Soviet UnionThough it also supplies excellent backgrounddiscussion,by its very nature it cannot go deeplyinto the matter of origins;its eyes are fixed ontoday.Yet no historical process can be under-stood unless its origins are at least approximatelyclear. What has long been needed is a singlevolume telling the tangled tale of the RussianRevolution in a manner suitable to our owngeneration. \nThe captive “Citizen”Romanov and his children in Tobolsk,Siberia. From leftto right:Grand Duchesses Olgaand Anastasia, the Czar,Grand Duchess Tatiana, the Czarevich,GrandDuchess revolution in 1917,andthe events that led up to it.\"The attempt is successful;he has done no less thanthis, and pretends to no more.He is clear, intelligent and lively,so much so thateven those readers who ordinarily balk at \"history\"will find themselves engrossedin this narrative of actual events deep-dyed in the colors of conspiracy, treachery, corruption and murder. \nThis is probably the clearest retelling in English of a complex story. But it ismore than that.It is based not merely on the standard literature but on a vastlibrary of hitherto secret records of the German Foreign Office. At the endof World War II these archives were fortunately saved from destruction, andhave since been submitted to the careful scrutiny of scholars. It is uponthese papers that Mr.Moorehead relies
