a thousand years afterOmar Khayyām created hisRubaiyāt,another eminent Per-sian has chosen the same poeticmode to present his thoughtsand philosophy. \nIn these pages Ghods Nakhaipresents his Rubaiyat:135 stanzas, each a complete poem in itself, without any narrative sequence, yet—like so many eastern pearls—threaded on the strand of oneman's wisdom and knowledgeof the world. \nJust as Omar Khayyām wasclosely associated with theeleventh-century court ofMalik Shah, the author of thisnew Rubäiyat has been inti-mately involved with the Per-sian Government of today inmany responsible posts,in-cluding that of Minister ofForeign Affairs. \nThus the wheel of coinci-dence turns,to complete athousand-year cycle. \nJacket design byBRIAN RUSSELL \n12s 6d net \nIN U.K.ONLY \nFulham in Great Britain by The Garden CityPress Ltd.,in Letchworth,Herfordshire,on AbbeyMills Suede Text paper and bound by them. \n# Foreword\n\nIn the West the poetical mode of the rubaiyat isgenerally associated with Omar Khayyam, though in Persia all the great poets such as Rumi,Sa'di,Hafez and others have composed rubaiyat. It is,however, rarer to find amongst the rubaiyatof other Iranian poets the same philosophy as inthat of Omar Khayyam. It is indeed Khayyam'steaching expressed in this particular garb whichhas made it so interesting to the West. \nI have always been attracted to the Rubaiyatof Omar Khayyam, even from my youth.Alsoduring my youth I composed many rubaiyat, but after entering into diplomatic service myconstant engagements abroad put a temporarystop to my activities in this field. \nA few years ago,for certain political reasons,Iabandoned my diplomatic functions and retiredto Shiraz, the birthplace of Hafez and Sa'di andthe enchanting seat of poetical inspiration inPersia. There I found myself once more carriedaway,as if by magic, with a renewed andstronger urge to express my inner thoughts, and \nmy desire to be happy and_to let others behappy,in the mode of the rubaiyat. \nI have always believed that this objective—happiness—is best attained by observing theuniversal truth, expressed in these poems, thatwe are here but for a short time and gone thenext moment never to be here again. So,whatare sorrow, greed, and selfishness for?Be happyand let others be happy. This tenet, expressed ina particular poetical form, has been proved to beperfect for over a thousand years since OmarKhayyam. \nI wish to express my gratitude to the followingscholars and statesmen-poets who have labouredlong and lovingly over versifying my Rubaiyatin their own mother tongues:Professor KazumYano,President of Tokyo Metropolitan Uni-versity;His Excellency Nan Ju Wu,Ambassadorof the Nationalist Republic of China inTeheran; His Excellency Fuat Beyramoglu,Turkey's Ambassador to Italy;Mr.N.J.deRoy,the Dutch poet;the late Salam Ahmad, the Kurdish poet;and the Arab poets, scholars, historians and academicians,Saleh Ja'fari,Dr.Mustafa Javad and Mr.Mehdi Jassim.
