Using R. W. Connell’s framework of hegemonic masculinity, the study analyzes sixteen semi-structured in-depth interviews with male and female Waseda University students in Tokyo. Findings show that the salaryman lifestyle remains a powerful ideal and that otaku and herbivore masculinity have not replaced its hegemonic status. Suggested contrary views largely stem from misunderstandings of the terms and limited ethnological grounding without an emic perspective.","LUND UNIVERSITY • CENTRE FOR EAST AND SOUTH-EAST ASIAN STUDIES  \nThe Resilience of Hegemonic Salaryman Masculinity:  \nA comparison of three prominent masculinities  \nAuthor: Jef Smitsmans  \nSupervisor: Karl Gustafsson  \nMaster’s Programme in Asian Studies Spring semester 2014  \nABSTRACT  \nIt was the aim of this thesis to explore whether salaryman masculinity has lost its status as hegemonic form of masculinity to otaku masculinity or herbivore masculinity. The thesis makes use of the theoretical framework of hegemonic masculinity as first used by R.W. Connell. In order to assess changes in masculinity, sixteen semi-structured in-depth interviews have been conducted with students, both male and female, from Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan. The main findings of the research were that other than what a great deal of literature on hegemonic masculinity in Japan suggests, the salaryman lifestyle still serves as a powerful ideal in the lives of young students, and that otaku and herbivore masculinity have not taken over the hegemonic status of salaryman masculinity. The fact that it has been suggested otherwise was found to be mostly due to misguided understandings of what the terms otaku and ‘herbivore man’mean, which in its turn is due to poor ethnological grounding and lack of an emic perspective.  \nWord count: 16.442  \nTABLE OF CONTENTS  \nABSTRACT ............................................................................................................................................................... 2  \nTABLE OF CONTENTS .......................................................................................................................................... 3  \nINTRODUCTION ..................................................................................................................................................... 5  \nRESEARCH PROBLEM ................................................................................................................................................................. 5  \nRELEVANCE ................................................................................................................................................................................. 5  \nCONTEXT OF THE RESEARCH .................................................................................................................................................... 6  \nRESEARCH QUESTIONS .............................................................................................................................................................. 7  \nDISPOSITION ............................................................................................................................................................................... 7  \nMETHODOLOGY..................................................................................................................................................... 9  \nMETATHEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS .................................................................................................................................. 9  \nRESEARCH DESIGN ..................................................................................................................................................................... 9  \nInterviews ............................................................................................................................................................................... 10  \nCRITICAL APPROACH............................................................................................................................................................... 11  \nETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS ................................................................................................................................................... 11  \nTHEORETICAL FRAMEWORK..........................................................................................................................13","cbCaivoOhQsAfg7T","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaivoOhQsAfg7T","pdf",459343,1,55,"English","en",105,"# Introduction\n## Research Problem\n## Relevance\n## Context of the Research\n## Research Questions\n## Disposition\n## Methodology\n## Metatheoretical Considerations\n## Research Design\n## Interviews\n## Critical Approach\n## Ethical Considerations\n# Theoretical Framework\n## Starting Point\n## Hegemony: Power Relations Between Different Masculinities\n## Resistance and Change\n## Putting the Theory to Work\n## Critical Discussion of the Theory\n## Concluding Remarks About the Theory\n# Literature Review\n## Post-War Period\n## Interest for Japanese Salarymen: “Learning from Japan”\n## Establishing the Salaryman as Hegemonic Masculinity in Japan","[{\"question\":\"What central question does the thesis address about masculinity in Japan?\",\"answer\":\"Whether salaryman masculinity has lost hegemonic status to otaku masculinity or herbivore masculinity.\"},{\"question\":\"What methodology does the research use to assess changes in masculinity?\",\"answer\":\"It applies the theory of hegemonic masculinity and analyzes sixteen semi-structured in-depth interviews with Waseda University students in Tokyo.\"},{\"question\":\"What are the main findings regarding otaku and herbivore masculinity?\",\"answer\":\"Otaku and herbivore masculinity do not take over the hegemonic status of salaryman masculinity;
