THE REMARKABLE ODYSSEY OFDAVID BAYER\n\nBy Gerry Sorkin with David Bayer \n## FORWARD\n\nTHE REMARKABLE ODYSSEY OF DAVID BAYERis the story of a Polish Jew, \nwho as a teenager was snatched away for slave laborby the Nazis, but who survived. \nEspecially For \nAdele \nSandra and Mark \nJoshua and Jennifer \nCOPYRIGHT2000GERALDB.SORKINAND DAVID BAYERPublished by The Marshfire Press,G.B.Sorkin about titling this narrative“B74,”but it hurt too much.It had been,of all the inhuman indignities inflicted on him bythe Nazis, the one that had taken away his very being as aperson. \nThe one that dehumanized him.Made him a survivor. One of too few who did manage to survive. \nThis is just some of David's story, one that relates howhe'd come to where Arbeit Macht Frei, where he'd gone after-wards,truly an odyssey, and where he is today.Like thenarrative every survivor can relate, there are hardly enoughpages to tell of every ordeal each one suffered. What so manymen, women and children had to endure on a daily, hourly, minute to minute basis, now and for millennia to come, cries outto be told. \nBut there isn't enough paper for the pages it wouldtake to describe the humiliation, hunger, torture, sufferings tominds bodies and souls, and viciously contrived murder inflict-ed on them by Nazi madness. \nPerpetrated on these people whose traditional joyful \nREMARKABLE ODYSSEY \ntoast is L'chaim,to life;whose anthem is Hatikvah, hope;and whose greeting coming and going is Shalom, peace. \nDo the math yourself. For those that did not survive.Assume each of the six million lost had endured their condem-nation for an average of two and a half years.Assume alsoeach had to experience only three indignities every day aboutwhich one page could easily have been written.Mealtimes.Forget the medical experiments, beatings, shootings, cold, heat, the screams of friends, loved ones, and those they mighthave gotten to know, and never would. The stink of burninghuman flesh.Count only the so-called mealtimes.Three mini-mal meals a day.Access to which,of course, very few if evenany, were given. But just suppose.Multiply the three by thesix million, and again by three hundred sixty five days a year, and again by the just two and half years of estimated survivalThat's almost sixteen and one half billion pages. \nAlmost 16,500,000,000. \nHow many trees would have to have been cut to producesixteen and one half billion pages? \nWould all the rags which had been the clothes ofthese victims make so many pages? \nIn his remarks taped for the U.S.Memorial Holocaust \nREMARKABLE ODYSSEY \nMuseum,David had only thirty nine pages of typewrittenmaterial transcribed.Obviously painfully related.A phrasehere triggered another thought there, then another incidentstill further over there, and then back to here, and so on.Nearthe end of the second and last tape he too, commented on theinability to document all that cried out for revelation. \n\"You can describe it a hundred thousand times. You canonly know your own pain. You cannot know somebody else'spain. The Hebrew people say,'If all the water were ink, andall the woods were pens, and all the sky were parchment, youcannot write everything.'There is no end to it.For a millionyears there will be stories.\" \nSo it is left to the recollections of those who did pre-vail.To those who did make it through the Nazi hell.Alongwith added survivors of the infernal abysses created for Jewsby Hitler's cohorts, particularly fellow Nazis in Austria, theBaltic states of Lithuania,Latvia and Estonia, the Balkansespecially Croatia and Bosnia,in Vichy France. And others. And even among the Allies in the Ukraine and
