quarrels,calming the trop dezele of political friends,disarming the malice ofpolitical foes—such were the occupations of the day,and they left the Dictator weary enough at night:forto his simple solitude-loving nature the constant din  \nof eager voices was in itself a severe trial of patience.But the dawn ever found him fresh and radiant.Acup of coffee and to horse,accompanied by such ofhis aides as were not on active service,and thus wemade acquaintance with Palermo and its environs.  \nOne morning we visited the Castellamare,whichthe people of Palermo,in accordance with a dicta-torial decree,were demolishing with hearty good-will.
