Ryan’s first thoughts turn to his family and a looming schedule, but memory collapses back to a parking garage and a chemical-sweet smell. Blake Foster answers from the dark, confirming both men have suffered head and shoulder injuries and have no clear sense of location, suggesting a planned, repeatable abduction rather than a random act.","THE REAPER GAMES \nSIMON KING \nOCEANOFPDF. Tathemdarkidnigwhte, lcoomer th \ncomfortable dark behind closed eyes. This was something else entirely. Something absolute. A dark so complete and so deliberate that his first conscious thought was that he had gone blind. \nHe tried to move his hands. They wouldn't come. He felt his arms raised above his head, wrists bound together, and whatever held them in place felt almost industrial. Thick plastic, unforgiving, the kind of restraint that made no allowances for comfort or dignity. He could feel the pull of his own weight against it, his shoulders already aching with a dull, deep burn that told him he hadn't been hanging like this for seconds. He'd been here awhile. \nHe opened his mouth. Closed it. Tried again. \n\"Hello?\" \nThe word dissolved immediately, swallowed by whatever space surrounded him. Not an echo. Not a reverberation. Just gone. Absorbed into the shadows. He had no sense of the room's size, no sense of walls or ceiling, nothing to orient himself by except the cold concrete floor beneath his feet and the black in every direction. Not even a shadow existed, with its defined outlines, just a suffocating sea of blackness that consumed the world as a whole. \nHe thought about Emma. He thought about the kids. He thought about Thursday morning. Was it still Thursday? He thought about the school run \nhe was supposed to be doing, the meeting at eleven he was no doubt late for, and the call he'd been dreading from a number he'd recognized as belonging to a man named Garrett, who was not a patient man and who was owed a great deal of money. \nHow the fuck did I get here? The thought hit him hard, hard enough for his jaw to clench. \nThe last thing he remembered was the parking garage. The underground one beneath his office building. His footsteps on concrete. A smell, something chemical and sweet, and then…nothing. Nothing at all. Nothing except the blackness. \n\"Hello?\" he asked again. Louder this time. And then someone answered. \nRyan Shaw heard the voice before he fully understood where he was. \nHe'd been drifting. Not quite unconscious, not quite awake, occupying some grey corridor between the two where thought moved slowly and nothing quite connected. The voice pulled him back. Male.
