\nThere’s one door,  \nAnd probably a window.  \nTHE QUEEN gives a tour to BRONWYN, a one-eyed woman carrying a sword.  \nTHE QUEEN  \nI never thought I’d have to put my daughter to sleep.  \nIt’s not the kind of thingI mean  \nYou’re holding this delicate little pink  \nblob,  \nthat you made with your own body and you look at her  \nYou look at her.  \nAnd you feel wonder.  \nAwe.  \nPanic.  \nYou don’t feel  \n-you don’t think-  \n“I’m going to put you to sleep someday.”  \nI mean,  \nI didn’t put her to sleep.  \nThe King  \nhe, ahThe King hired someone.  \nA witch,  \nI think she called herself.  \nA sorceress.  \nFully vetted, of course.  \nAnd everyone agreed it was the right thing to do.  \nAnd the princess had, well    \nA memory plays in front of the Queen’s eyes.  \nIt is hard for her to look at, so she doesn’t let it linger  \nYou know,  \nwhen she was born, I thought  \n“It will be so nice to have someone to be miserable with.”  \nAnd then I thought“I’m sorry.”  \nBecause that’s not a happy way to be met.  \nAnd then I thought“I’m sorry,” again because  \nmotherhood is full of guilt and regret  \nand I was already so very, very sorry.  \nI had been hoping for a boy.  \nBecause that’s what everyone else wanted, of course.  \nAnd because a boy would go off and do things, and then I’d be left alone to continue managing the maidsand picking out silverware  \nand gilding my cage with fine art and sweet wine.  \nBut a girl…  \nA princess.  \nA princess to inherit the right to marry someone deserving of inheriting the kingdom…  \n“Oh well,” I thought.  \nI thought “We’ll gild this cage together, then.”  \nBut she was a lock-pick.  \nAn agitator.  \nAnd a draft horse  \nin the skin of a pink baby princess with my eyes and her father’s hair and something else’s heart  \nI’m telling you this  \nbecause it’s important, you see.  \nIt’s important that you know that we did it for the best  \nI am not a monster.  \nI want you to know I am not a monster.  \nI am a mother.  \nAnd this bird would notcould not  \nstay in her cage.  \nBeat  \nThe last GuardianThey were lax.  \nThey were lax and now they are dead.  \nAnd I told the guard that I would be the
