God,from the rising of the sun to its setting;from your goodness enrich us,by your love inspire us,by your Spirit guide us,by your power protect us,in your mercy receive us,now and always. \n# How to Use This Booklet\n\nDuring each week of Advent, begin by reading the“Something to think and pray about each day thisweek.”Then go through“The Presence of God,”“Freedom,”and“Consciousness”steps to help youprepare yourself to hear the Word of God speaking toyou. In the next step,\"The Word,\"turn to the Scrip-ture reading for each day of the week.Inspirationpoints are provided if you need them. Then return tothe“Conversation”and “Conclusion”steps.Followthis process every day of Advent. \nThe Advent retreat at the back of this book followsa similar structure:an invitation to experience still-ness,a Scripture passage and reflection points, andsuggestions for prayer;you may find it useful to moveback and forth between the daily reflections and theretreat. \n# The First Week of AdventNovember 29-December 5,2020\n\nSomething to think and pray about each day this week: \nThe terms spiritual and religious are often used in-terchangeably and most often when people identifythemselves as“spiritual but not religious.”Joseph andMary,as they are depicted in the Christmas story inMatthew's Gospel, appear deeply spiritual. They useinner resources to overcome difficulties;these diffi-culties and challenges don't have to be spelled out tothose of us familiar with the account of Jesus'birth. These inner resources open them to occasions whenGod's promptings and grace help nudge them intoa safer place, even though at times comfort mighttempt them to sit stillin the same spot for a while. \nHowever,the narrative in Matthew shows howdeeply they are immersed in the religion of theirdays.Quotes from the Old Testament show howthese moments are part of something greater and ofwhich they are an important part. The two, religionand spirituality, are one.One definition of spiritual-ity that I cannot forget is that it is the art of makingconnections. In our prayers and in our ponderings wetry to connect with someone or something that canhelp us make our paths straight and find our ownImmanuel,or God who is with us(Matthew 1:23).If \nwe remain solely spiritual(if that can be done),thenwe are left with nothing to connect to,and good reli-gion helps us connect deeply through its rituals,peo-ples,wisdom,and traditions. \nAlan Hilliard,Dipping into AdventMessenger Publications,2019 \n# The Presence of God\n\nDear Jesus,I come to you today longing for yourpresence.I desire to love you as you love me.Maynothing ever separate me from you. \n# Freedom\n\nLord,grant me the grace to be free from the excessesof this life.Let me not get caught up with the desirefor wealth.Keep my heart and mind free to love andserve you. \n# Consciousness\n\nWhere do I
