\n# The Practice of thePresence of God\n\nBROTHERLAWRENCE \n# The Practiceof thePresence of God\n\nFrom the Prefaceto the \nOriginal French Edition,A.D.1692 \n“Although death has carried off last yearmany of the Order of the CarmelitesDechausses, brethren who have left indying rare legacies of lives of virtue;Providence,it would seem, has desired thatthe eyes of men should be cast chiefly onBrother Lawrence... \n“Several persons having seen a copy ofone of his letters, have desired to see more;and to meet this wish, care has been taken tocollect as many as possible of those whichBrother Lawrence wrote with his ownhand... \n“All Christians will find herein much thatis edifying. Those in the thick of the greatworld will learn from these letters howgreatly they deceive themselves, seeking forpeace and joy in the false glitter of the thingsthat are seen, yet temporal:those who areseeking the Highest Good will gain from thisbook strength to persevere in the practice ofvirtue. All,whatever their lifework, will find \nprofit,for they will see herein a brother, busied as they are in outward affairs, who inthe midst of the most exacting occupations, has learnt so well to accord action withcontemplation, that for the space of morethan forty years he hardly ever turned fromthe Presence of God.\" \nFOREWORD \nNow when they saw the boldness of Peter andJohn and perceived that they were unlearned andignorant men, they marveled;and they tookknowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.Acts 4:13. \nThe world is used to receiving an endlessnumber of books at the hands of clerkly andlearned men—soon to forget or reject mostof them as no great loss. \nBut it has a way of treasuring a certainFisherman's memories taken down by abright young companion;or the fortunes ofa wayfarer grubbed out on paper by a Tinkertwelve years in jail.Peter's Gospel(Mark)andBunyan's Pilgrim's Progress are secure as longas men shall read. And so perhaps is thispresent little book.Men have been readingit for their good ever since its humbleauthor died just two hundred and fifty yearsago. \nThere must have been something rare ina monastery cook that a Grand Vicar shouldlisten to his talk and gohome and make notesof it;and that high-placed persons should \nbeg of him not the recipe for a sauce but hissecret of a happy life. This secret, sharp criticsmay say,is not the whole of wisdom, not acomplete system either of philosophy ortheology. But even today it is a life-saver tothe harried citizen pulled one way bymystery and the other way by matter-of-fact.Your average man will stop and listen to acook who knows God,when the animad-versions of theologians and philosophersonly weary him as babblings in a strangetongue. \nBrother Lawrence lived in times strangelylike our own.He began life as NicholasHerman in Lorraine—at one of the manyalternations when the province was French. In his boyhood began that Thirty Years'Warwhich drew all Europe into its bloody maw—and still has some part in the outraged worldof today \nNo doubt Nicholas Herman was one ofmillions sucked into that vortex, for first hewas a common soldier.Later,he himselftells us“that he had been a footman toMonsieur Fieubert, the treasurer, and thathewas a great awkward fellow, who brokeeverything.\" \nThere are all too many of us now pastmiddle age who feel soiled and weary—thebloom rubbed off from our aspirations—ourhopes scaled down to the living of a life moremediocre every day.To such it comes likesecond wind to consort with a man of fiftywho continues to find heaven on earthamong the pots and pans of an institution'skitchen. We may demur that he was of finerstuff than we;but No,he pleads,I didnothing but let God have His own way withme. \nIt is in the hope that many will take thisbare-footed lay brother at his word, andmake his Practice their own, that the editorhas collated this edition from many of formercenturies, and sends it on its way. \n—Gilbert P.Symons,1941
