The day is warm, filled with the fresh scent of hay. Reapers work in the far meadow; backs bent, they swing their scythesin tandem, keeping a safe distance apart. Farm boys follow, tying sheaves with string and standing the stooks on the ground. These are my friends, who, like me at fifteen, have left school with little idea of what to do. Overhead, a flock of swallows pass with a long journey ahead. Arms stretched wide, I close my eyes; wind in my hair, I soar through the sky passing over green fields, sparkling seas, snow-capped mountains and burnt orange deserts. Head spinning, I tilt forwards and grab the gate. One day, one day I’m going to fly.  \nIn the kitchen, Aunty Lucy is at the table, as usual on a Sunday, slicing apples.
