Christand become members of that one great family, the Catholic Church.Just as the father of a familyis intensely interested in the members of his familyand zealous for their common well-being,so the visiblehead of the family of the Church, the Pope,is intenselyinterested in his children and zealous for their spir-itual well-being,their sanctification. This love andzeal are especially manifested in the solicitude whichthe Holy Father has for the dignity and beauty ofcorporate worship, that exterior manifestation of theoperation of divine life in our soul. \nThis fatherly care and solicitude of Christ's vicarsis attested by the Motu Proprio on Sacred Musicof Pius X and the apostolic constitution Divini Cultusof Pius XI.These two documents are letters of in-struction written to help and advise the members ofthe Catholic hierarchy in their mission of fostering afuller and more perfect spiritual life in Christ's Mys-tical Body. Both of these letters of instruction strikeat the core of the problem existing today in divine wor-ship:the lack of fellowship and of dignity, attention, and devotion in the public worship of the Church. \nPope Pius X realized that public participation inthe worship of the Church is the only way of formingthe faithful according to the mind of Christ.Parti-cipation in public worship calls for active participa-tion in the sacred chant. The chant of the Church, enriched with the doctrine of the Spouse of Christ, needed to be given its proper place in the Church'sworship. Therefore Pius X wrote a letter on churchmusic, the Motu Proprio on Sacred Music, explaining \nthe importance of music in divine worship and settingdown rules regulating the use of it. \nIn some places these loving admonitions wereaccepted and put into practice. In other places thePope's letter was read with interest, but went un-heeded.In still other places, however, there aroseeven opposition to the prescriptions he laid down.Sodisappointing was the response to Pius X's solicitousappeal that one of his successors,Pius XI,realizingthat many pastors of Christ's flock had disregardedthe Motu Proprio to the detriment of public worship, wrote another letter of instruction on church music, the Divini Cultus. In this letter Pope Pius XI sanc-tions all the prescriptions of the Motu Proprio of PiusX,insisting on their observance, and urges his count-less children, who for so long have been silent spec-tators at the mysteries of Christ,to take their right-ful share in them. \nIn 1944 the Conception Abbey Press published theMotu Proprio of Pius X in an entirely new translation. The supply of this first edition was soon exhausted,so unexpected had been the response to our efforts tomake the words of Pope Pius X known to the world. In a second edition,in 1945,of the Motu Proprio, theapostolic constitution Divini Cultus of Pius XI wasadded. In this latest edition in 1956,we now addMusicae Sacrae Disciplina by Pius XII.These threedocuments are here presented to those interested inrestoring to the members of Christ's Body their right-ful part in divine worship.","cbCaim0N6B25Pci9","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaim0N6B25Pci9","pdf",3069648,56,"English","# Preface\n# Motu Proprio","[{\"question\":\"What is the main purpose of the preface in this
